Shailene Woodley Returns to the Emmys in Balenciaga

Like her Big Little Lies co-star Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley returned to the Emmy Awards for the first time since 2017. This time, however, she arrived as an Emmy winner, following her Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series win for Paradise at last week’s Creative Arts Emmys, before taking on presenter duties this evening.

The actress wore a Balenciaga Fall 2026 Haute Couture look.

We often say we want to see something different during awards season, and this could not be more different from everything else we have seen on this red carpet. I don’t hate the look or the idea, but I do hate the execution.

This could have been so good on Shailene had it fit her properly. She is overwhelmed by fabric on both the top and bottom half, and unfortunately, that is the first thing you notice.

So much so that you barely get to appreciate the styling, from the gemstone necklace to the burgundy leather gloves.

Granted, it would have been difficult to hem those heavily embellished trousers, but was preserving the runway look worth sending Shailene out in trousers that are almost comically too long? Why put your client in that position? Make it work for her proportions or give her something else.

This kind of exaggerated styling can work brilliantly for Tracee Ellis Ross, but that formula doesn’t translate to all of Karla Welch’s clients.

The hair isn’t working for me either.
