Hilary Duff attended The Daily Front Row’s 10th Annual Fashion Los Angeles Awards on Tuesday evening.

When I first saw the actress in this Victoria Beckham Spring 2023 pale-blue halter draped dress, I was taken by the softness of the colour and the ease of the silhouette, which feels fresh and flattering on her. That initial impression, however, shifted when it came to the footwear, which didn’t quite sit right at first glance.

But the side view tells a different story. The reveal of the black back panel, which falls into a subtle train, starts to justify the choice of black pumps, creating a visual link that wasn’t immediately obvious from the front.

Still, that doesn’t resolve the bigger question. Why introduce such a stark contrast to a look that is otherwise so light and seasonally aligned?

Hilary’s pale-blue version reads as one idea from the front, while the black back panel introduces a completely different direction, which breaks the flow of the look. The contrast works better on the runway because the boots reinforce that shift, tying the elements together, whereas here the idea feels less fully realised.
