Celebrity-Inspired Swimwear

Swimsuit season is here, which means sun, sea, sand and hours of poolside lounging. In summers past, celebrity swimwear inspo was restricted to slim body types in skimpy bikinis, with notable examples from stars of the 50s and 60s all the way through to the present day.
More recently, we’ve seen a more diverse range of body types gracing our screens and socials, and while there is still plenty more progress to be made in this area, we’re now seeing examples of beach bodies in all shapes and sizes and in turn, a more varied selection of fun swimwear styles to choose from.
Cover-Ups
There are plenty of alternatives to traditional swimsuits: modest swimwear and additions like sarongs or kaftans (like the stunning bright yellow one worn by Rebel Wilson in 2022) are all easy ways to feel cool and confident without wearing anything revealing.
There’s also something undeniably chic about a long-sleeved one-piece, as seen on the likes of Cameron Diaz, who made waves with a high-neck floral print number back in 2021. As a bonus, they also add a little extra sun protection along with your SPF.
One-Piece Swimsuits
You can’t go wrong with a classic one-piece swimsuit: simple and elegant, they flatter all figures and come in a range of styles that fit your personal vacation vibe, ranging from more revealing cut-out styles to retro bathing suits as worn by Taylor Swift.
One-pieces are also a great way to show off pattern, as shown by model Ashley Graham in summer 2016, when she donned a stunning black-and-white geometric print swimsuit with panel detailing and matching earrings.
Tankinis
With so many 90s and Y2K trends coming back, it was only a matter of time before tankinis made a reappearance. Somewhere between a bikini and a one-piece, the tankini adds a little extra coverage plus the mix-and-match versatility of a two-piece.
One of the first celebrities to welcome its return was Bella Hadid, who wore her chocolate brown tankini to the beach in 2021, paired with a cute crochet bucket hat and beaded jewelry for a truly nostalgic nineties look.
Bikinis
Two-piece swimsuits have been a mainstay of summer fashion ever since the 1950s. Since then, we’ve seen celebrities rock various versions of the bikini both on and off the beach, like Amelia Gray Hamlin, with her unexpectedly cool cherry-print bikini top, jorts and crocs combo.
Bikini designs have also come a long way since the first “string” styles came out decades ago, offering more structure, support and style to all body types. Actress Danielle Brooks showed off a great example of this in a gorgeous red two-piece back in 2017, with a criss-cross style top and matching high-waisted briefs,
The (Bikini) Bottom Line
The key factors to look for when purchasing a swimsuit are comfort, support and style. If you’re headed off on vacation, the last thing you want is to wear something that feels restrictive or uncomfortable, so consider this when making your purchase.
Look for a style that reflects pieces you own (this way it can also double as an additional top). If you’re not sure about colors or patterns, go for something neutral to begin with. Most of all, remember every body is a beach body, so get out there and have fun!
