Fan Binging In Tadashi Shoji – 2nd Beijing Film Festival Opening Ceremony

She’s back. Fan Bingbing is back to giving me goosebumps after a succession of so-so red-carpet looks.

The Asian actress looked sensational at the 2nd Beijing International Film Festival opening ceremony, held at the China National Convention Center this evening wearing a Tadashi Shoji Fall 2012 gown.

Her blood-red velvet gown with a black lace beaded bodice is a classic case of East meets West.

Asian influences including a crystallized Judith Leiber ‘Pagoda’ bag are mixed with old Hollywood styling featuring marcel waves.

Bold red matte lips and emerald Cartier jewels completed her look.

    I love it

  2. Jess2 April 25, 2012 at 12:47 #

Perfectly outstanding!! Gorgeous dress and love the styling!!

  3. ZEO April 24, 2012 at 18:07 #

I adore that ring with that handbag, just had to add this.

  4. Estranged April 24, 2012 at 17:48 #

Unlike most, I don’t love it. The overall impression I get is that she looks too perfect, more like a porcelain doll than a real person. Having said that, I do like the gown itself and the pagoda-shaped bag is a nice, quirky touch.

    • Mia April 24, 2012 at 20:17 #

I guess I’m the only other person who thinks that.
The dress is cool and the bad is pretty adorable but the overall look is overdone. I especially dislike her hair…there’s something contrived and unnatural about the outfit and there’s just too much going on. With a dress with that much detail, you have to take it easy on styling and accessories.

  5. TeuntjeVDW April 24, 2012 at 17:44 #

    WOW, this is amazing!

  6. AnnaP April 24, 2012 at 17:37 #

A shiver literally went all down my body looking at this. I am speechless really – she looks so amazing, she doesn’t look real. I thought Angelbaby was on for BDOTY, but now she has serious competition. Every aspect of this look is stupendous from the hair to the make up to the accessories not forgetting the actual dress. Fan BingBing must the greatest couture ambassador!

  7. Anissa April 24, 2012 at 15:34 #

Perfection from head to toe and I adore that bag!

  8. Ines April 24, 2012 at 14:15 #

Those Asian women sure knows how to bring it.

  9. A. April 24, 2012 at 13:27 #

She’s a real stylista. loving this look. she knows how to make a big sartorial statement. Is she going for the cannes festival this year? I know sonam kapoor is going as the l’oreal brand ambassador. she’s a l’oreal spokesperson as well, right?

    • Fashion Critic April 24, 2012 at 13:30 #

Yes, I believe so as she is a L’oreal girl

      • A. April 24, 2012 at 13:36 #

wow. she better wear some atelier versace on the red carpet this year. she looks great in AV gowns.

  10. ZEO April 24, 2012 at 13:14 #

I really want the bag.Its so cute!

  11. Iris April 24, 2012 at 10:22 #

After that template-western-starlet Gucci look yesterday, YAY!

  12. MEME April 24, 2012 at 10:08 #

Definately top contender for BDOTW…. I love this…

  13. d April 24, 2012 at 09:46 #

love the bag, but she is so pale. that scares me

  14. Kiwi April 24, 2012 at 09:23 #

This look is to Die for.. awesome

  15. zeo April 24, 2012 at 08:58 #

She looks amazing, loves everything about this look!

  16. Rashmi April 24, 2012 at 07:46 #

I like the black version so much more!
Dont like her hairstyle with the gown.. Something like the model, would have been better

  17. christine April 24, 2012 at 07:42 #

I think she looks like a vampire

  18. Mol April 24, 2012 at 05:35 #

I love the color of this, the drama of the red and black and then the amusement of the bag, it’s perfect in every detail, this is a memorable look, I won’t forget it.

  19. katrina April 24, 2012 at 04:41 #

Yes FC, you are right; Fan “Madame Recamier” Bingbing is really back………..

  22. chyc April 24, 2012 at 02:51 #

    That minaudiere is simply amazing!

  23. bee7 April 24, 2012 at 01:56 #

somehow it looks better on the runway model. but Fan is gorgeous too, her bag is to die for.

  24. jajulicious April 24, 2012 at 01:46 #

Yes, everything is perfect right down to that nail color.

  25. Clover April 24, 2012 at 01:23 #

Oh no, DUDE please tie your bowtie properly in the presence of such greatness.

  26. ash April 24, 2012 at 00:59 #

OMG, this is so Dragon Lady meets Shanghai Express, just glamour, glamour and glamour from head to toe! I wish she goes to Cannes!

  27. Fiona April 24, 2012 at 00:58 #

WOW – I absolutely LOVE this! I am a major fan of 1930’s style and she looks like she stepped out of colonial Shanghai – amazing. Everything fits her so beautifully, and the colour is gorgeous. BDOTW for sure.

  28. CreoleLady April 24, 2012 at 00:07 #

    *stunned silence*

No gimmicks, opulent color, curvaceous silhouette and oh that bag. Did I say something about being frustrated with fall looks (where it is not fall)? I withdraw every objection. On my BDOTY contender list.

  29. TeaAtTwo April 23, 2012 at 23:25 #

I adore this look so much. I love the colour, the red looks lovely on her. So a bit retro glamorous looking so seductive with the hair and make up. Her figure looks amazing. I hope to see it in BDOTW poll.

  30. Rory April 23, 2012 at 23:19 #

    ok, BDOTY contender.

    • gurlygurl April 24, 2012 at 12:37 #

      My thoughts exactly! Perfection!

  31. Zineb April 23, 2012 at 23:07 #

Can she look bad? I’m loving this look from head to toe, make up, hair, dress, Fan is picture prefect !

  32. ramsay April 23, 2012 at 22:48 #

This is very good with a good dose of dramatic – I really like it – And I have never really liked a Tadashi Shoji dress before (all those Octavia Spencer dresses seemed too vanilla for me – too high street)- But this very good and should be in the BDOTW list

  33. Fromchi-town April 23, 2012 at 22:37 #

Wow…. She looks stunning. She is perfection from head to toe. Fan bing bing and Elie Saab was getting a bit old… But this is absolute swoon worthy. That bag with the dress is absolute genius.

  34. robbie April 23, 2012 at 22:14 #

this is a little too dita for my liking. i do love her bag though.

    • Vidhya April 23, 2012 at 22:43 #

exactly wat I thought. .a little too goth but still great. And this is how you wear velvet – Angelina!

    • Lola April 24, 2012 at 07:13 #

+1 looks forced and uneasy…so coreographed. Totally uncharming…

  35. MG April 23, 2012 at 22:11 #

She looks amazing!! the purse is a perfect touch. So elegant yet fun! BDOTW

  36. Cheryl April 23, 2012 at 22:07 #

I think she looks great but it would have helped if she had no background to compete with the lace detail on the dress and the amazing pagoda bag.

If I’m not mistaken, that’s Wu Chun on Bing Bing’s arm. He’s a former neighbour of mine (or at least, his family home in Brunei was just a stone’s throw away). He even studied in the same high school as I did.

    • Yvett April 24, 2012 at 01:19 #

She has that Old Shanghai sorta vibe to the look. J’adore!

PS thats not Wu Chun on her arm, it is Lee Hom.

    • Michelle April 24, 2012 at 01:26 #

Nah. The guy on her arm is Wang Leehom, not Wu Chun. They look quite different lol.

I love the styling of her hair, the dress, and the bag – but is it just me who feels the jewelry is a bit mismatched to the dress?

  37. bas April 23, 2012 at 22:04 #

I love that she gave us something new, and I absolutely LOVE that bag.

  38. Mary Jane Anderson April 23, 2012 at 21:58 #

Wow, I got some goosebumps too. And I think I haven’t got them since Rosie Huntington-Whiteley’s Transformers’ promo tour. Bingbing is just perfection. I love the funny twist her clutch brings to the dramatic look. We see a lot of beautiful looks on the red carpet, but I think it’s rare to see something that great. I mean, I TRULY wouldn’t change nothing to it. Wow again.

  39. Christine April 23, 2012 at 21:57 #

If only Olivia Wilde can hire her stylist. LOL.

  40. Christine April 23, 2012 at 21:56 #

Yeahhhhh to her for wearing my favorite dress from this collection!! I love their clothes and glad to see more celebs donning their looks 😀

  41. EmmaWoodhouse April 23, 2012 at 21:54 #

Btw, FC, do you know if Cate Blanchett is going to be at Cannes (for The Hobbit)? I hope so! It would be great to see her bring some glam. If she and Fan are on the red carpet together I think I may die! 😀

    • Fashion Critic April 23, 2012 at 22:00 #

not sure…I need to do some research into who is attending this year

      • Zineb April 23, 2012 at 23:03 #

Kirsten Stewart is coming 😀 Anybody excited?
        No… Yeah that’s what I thought too
She’d better smile and wear something worthy of Cannes or not bother at all coming !

        • Fashion Critic April 23, 2012 at 23:08 #

I hole she lives up to the occasion

          • EmmaWoodhouse April 23, 2012 at 23:23 #

LOL I hope so too–but hey, who knows, maybe she’ll pull it together! She had a couple of great Breaking Dawn premieres. That said, we shouldn’t be surprised by I don’t give a darn outfits and attitude… 🙁

      • Ines April 24, 2012 at 14:14 #

Kristen Dunst and Marion Cotillard are going as well. I think this year is going to be quite strong on the RC.

No comment for Kristen, she almost NEVER wear something that is longer than mid tight so I don’t know how/if she will pull a proper gown like at the Oscar or London BD premiere.

  42. Aline April 23, 2012 at 21:51 #

I’m going to stand alone here in my corner because I didn’t like it. I usually love what Fan wears but not this time around. I find this dress extremely aging, it’s probably because it’s velvet, but it’s the kind of look I’d expect in someone 30 years her senior.

I do adore the bag though.

    • asherlev1 April 23, 2012 at 22:06 #

      *joins you in your corner*

I don’t know, I mean it is definitely a statement look and she is pulling it off. I guess maybe I am more used to her looking girly as opposed to vampy

    • Alina April 24, 2012 at 15:06 #

    • Nina April 24, 2012 at 21:11 #

I seriously prefer it in all black. I don’t care for her though or her fashion, sorry. The bag is cute.

  43. EmmaWoodhouse April 23, 2012 at 21:50 #

At first I was a little undecided, but now I’m for it! She looks like such a classically Asian princess, very East-meets-West as you said. LOVE the bag! Can’t wait for her at Cannes–she really is unbeatable for her interesting style and presence! 😀

  44. LizLemooooon April 23, 2012 at 21:46 #

    OH MY GOD!!!

This is why fashion can be such a religious experience to me hahaha!
Flawless, absolutely flawless. I can’t get over that divine colour against her skin and that BAG! OH MY GOD!
She needs to be fast-tracked to the short-list of best dressed of the year for this look alone tbh.

  45. shap_half April 23, 2012 at 21:35 #

    Yes!!!!! She looks fantastic!

  46. Francesca April 23, 2012 at 21:32 #

    Love it! 🙂

By the way, am I the only with troubles accessing the site? When I enter the page, my latest post is the BDOTW poll one. It hasn’t been updated since. I only accessed this post from Twitter.

          good to hear.

Please always let me know when this happens. It is no bother at all.

  47. Rebecca Z April 23, 2012 at 21:31 #

Picture perfect. The bag is to die for, and too adorable with this dress

    • dee April 24, 2012 at 13:58 #

    • eva April 24, 2012 at 23:10 #

die for this bag too:)so stunning!

  48. HM April 23, 2012 at 21:27 #

My first reaction was ‘OH MY GOD!!!!!’. She looks amazing from head to toe! I can’t help but think she saves all of her best looks for Film Festivals as the last time she looked this amazing was probably during Cannes.

    • Fashion Critic April 23, 2012 at 21:40 #

“I can’t help but think she saves all of her best looks for Film Festivals” – I’m starting to think that too.

  49. Riley April 23, 2012 at 21:26 #

I am fanning myself (no pun intended) because I am about to swoon. PERFECTION. La Fabulosa Fan is back. I was starting to wonder where she went. Thankfully her stylist got his stuff together again.
This is the best interpretation of the dress possible. BDOTW fo sho! Her arm candy is swoon worthy too.

  50. Hannah April 23, 2012 at 21:22 #

I’m dying here. I wasso bored of Saab Fan Bingbing, so this is very exciting. I wanted to seeCate or Tilda in this, but this look just blows my mind. It’s how perfect head-to toe it is, and she still is so charismatic.
Her bag is the Judith Leiber ‘Pagoda’ bag.
They guy standing nextto her, with his tie like that, just looks so out of place!

    • Fashion Critic April 23, 2012 at 21:25 #

Thanks so much…I was searching to find out what it was called

      • Hannah April 23, 2012 at 21:52 #

        You’re very welcome 🙂
