Halle Berry, Jeremy Strong, Juliette Binoche and Alba Rohrwacher At The ‘Leave One Day’ Cannes Film Festival Premiere
I say this every year, and I stand by it: the Cannes Film Festival jury walking the red carpet hand-in-hand might be a beautiful display of unity, but for us fashion lovers—and probably the fashion houses that dressed them—it’s a logistical red carpet nightmare.

Where’s the solo shine? Where’s the breathing room for a statement train or a dramatic back detail? Gone, squished into a group shot.
Beetlejuice, but make it Jacquemus
Let’s start with Halle Berry. According to Paris-based fashion journalist Louis Pisano, who first broke the new Cannes dress code rules, the actual look Halle had planned for the opening ceremony was a Gaurav Gupta gown featuring a now-taboo long train. Unfortunately, that dress got sidelined thanks to the festival’s new “no trains” rule. In its place, she wore a black and white Jacquemus Spring 2025 trapeze gown that was serving major Beetlejuice energy. It’s graphic, it’s dramatic, and it moves well, but it’s hard not to mourn the loss of what could’ve been a show-stopping Gupta moment. If ever there was a time to break the rules, Halle, it was today. Chopard jewels completed an underwhelming opening.

Salmon: Medium, and Oh-So-Rare
Jeremy Strong gave us exactly what we wanted: not another black tux. Instead, he opted for a salmon-hued suit that still hit all the right formal notes. The black shoes were a minor sidestep, but not enough to derail the whole look. I had hoped he would take this route—fashion-forward, but still grounded—and he didn’t disappoint.

Deserved its own spotlight
Juliette Binoche was the one who really needed her own moment. Her Dior Haute Couture ensemble, an off-white silk crepe, featured a top that wrapped around her head and fell into a delicate train. Unfortunately, its architectural elegance was stifled by the close proximity of her fellow jurors. Dior’s drama needs air. Imagine this look sweeping across the carpet solo—it would’ve been a standout. Chopard jewels completed her look.

Chanel Reproduction
Alba Rohrwacher wore a beautiful custom Chanel gown inspired by the Spring 1987 Haute Couture collection. The black dress featured pleated tulle tiers, a romantic bow at the bodice, and off-the-shoulder sleeves that draped down her back. On its own, it’s a dream. In this closely packed group shot? It’s visually swallowed. You just don’t get the full story. Chopard jewels completed her look.

There’s no doubt that this jury is stacked with sartorial potential, but can we please give them a little solo spotlight next time? Because these looks deserve more than just a group pic on Getty Images.
