Kim Kardashian’s Cristóbal Balenciaga Archive Moment Was Worth The Wait

We have seen three looks from Law Roach since he started working with his new client, Kim Kardashian, but I have been waiting for that big fashion moment. And it finally arrived at the 2026 Academy Museum Gala in Los Angeles on Saturday.

We all know Kim’s history with the archives, and she delivered another archival moment in a 1951 Cristóbal Balenciaga Haute Couture gown sourced from Lily et Cie.

Yes, the strapless gown, with its pearl-embellished embroidery, draped bodice and dramatic train falling from a bow, follows Kim’s signature body-conscious silhouette. And I don’t think that is going to change anytime soon. What I appreciate here, however, is the mood.

There are no masks, no SKIMS-inspired lingerie and none of the Demna-era Balenciaga aesthetic we have seen her embrace at this event over the years. Despite the familiar silhouette, this feels like a reset.

And that mood? Pure Old Hollywood, with a touch of Elizabeth Taylor, particularly in the sculpted updo and the magnificent 55.8-carat Leviev Carmen diamond necklace, complemented by 10.2-carat Zydo Italy diamond earrings.

I also appreciate how the styling allows the craftsmanship of the original gown to shine. Kim has often favoured looks where the concept takes precedence over the clothes, but here, the fashion itself is the story.

If I were to nitpick, I wish the side zip had been concealed at the back. However, I have to give credit to whoever altered this archival piece, because comparing it with the original shows just how much work went into achieving Kim’s preferred fit.

I don’t think the public perception of Kim Kardashian will ever change, but I am genuinely intrigued to see how far she will allow Law Roach to reshape her style. And there is no question that, as the client, Kim will have the final say.

For now, this is easily my favourite look from their collaboration so far.

Stylist: Law Roach.
