Amal Clooney Wears Tom Ford for Venice Film Festival Opening

Amal Clooney and George Clooney attended the premiere of Ink, which opens the 2026 Venice Film Festival this evening, before George receives the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement.

George chose a classic Giorgio Armani tuxedo for his big night, while Amal delivered something I certainly wasn’t expecting.

One thing I did not have on my bingo card for this festival was Amal in a black dress. She is the queen of summery colour in Venice, so I was surprised to see her take to the red carpet in this custom Tom Ford by Haider Ackermann gown. Perhaps we should have taken the hint when she arrived in olive green earlier today.

Of course, this black gown is far from plain. The fitted silhouette features razor-sharp pleating, transparent georgette side panels and a geometric leather neckline, giving us plenty to take in despite the monochrome palette.

As I am forever a sandals girl, I would have preferred a pair of black sandals over the Tom Ford Vertigo pumps, but they certainly don’t take away from the look. A Tom Ford patent-leather clutch completed her look.

Considering George is being honoured tonight, I also wonder whether Amal deliberately chose something less attention-grabbing than the colourful, romantic gowns we usually associate with her Venice appearances. This is his big night, and while she still serving Amal Clooney glam, her choice of black allows the focus to remain on her husband and his career achievement.

It may not be the Amal Venice moment I was expecting, but I can understand why she chose it. And honestly, I love everything about it.
