Joey King Goes Gothic in Ilya Mingmoon for ‘Practical Magic 2’

Joey King attended the LA premiere of Practical Magic 2, held at Directors Village on Monday.

To say I was underwhelmed by her red carpet looks in London would be an understatement, so I was delighted to see her step outside of the Miu Miu bubble and give us something new and thematic with this Ilya Mingmoon dress.

The chartreuse satin and black lace immediately tap into the witchy premise of the film, but it is the construction that really sells this look for me. The exaggerated hips, corseted bodice and black feathered wings give the dress an eerie, almost otherworldly quality that feels entirely appropriate for Practical Magic 2.

There was plenty of potential for this to veer into Halloween territory, but Joey’s loose waves and neutral makeup kept the styling on the right side of the theme.

And then there is the back. The lace-up corsetry running almost the entire length of the bodice is striking enough, but the placement of the black feathered wings makes the rear view arguably more interesting than the front.

However, I can’t help feeling that either this dress was designed for someone much taller, or the bottom layers are working against Joey. The black satin flounce and train feel heavy on her frame, particularly when you see how cleanly the dress falls on the model.

I suspect the towering platform shoes were chosen to compensate for the length and replicate some of that height, but they didn’t quite solve the proportion issue. If anything, they make it more apparent that the dress needed some adjustment through the lower half.

Even so, this is a better look from the Practical Magic 2 press tour so far, but only because it feels connected to the film.

Bvlgari jewels completed her look.
