Penelope Cruz Wore Chanel To ‘The Invite’ LA Premiere

Penelope Cruz joined her co-star Olivia Wilde on the red carpet for The Invite Los Angeles premiere on Tuesday evening.

If I take you back to the Cannes Film Festival, we saw what I consider to be the best custom Chanel look Penelope has ever worn, and I hoped that marked the beginning of a more confident direction.

This custom pale-blue Chanel gown doesn’t follow that sultry path, but I do appreciate the change of pace.

The first thing worth noting is that it’s not black. Penelope has leaned heavily on black Chanel gowns in recent years, so I’m more than happy to see this softer colour, which feels much better suited to a summer premiere.

My sticking point is the feather-like pleated panel that wraps around the skirt. I wish it extended all the way to the hem instead of stopping mid-length, because the transition feels abrupt and interrupts the otherwise fluid silhouette.

The confetti-like appliqués scattered across the neckline and waist add a delicate finish, but for me, they’re secondary to the colour story.
