Ariana Grande joined Cynthia Erivo as they walked the yellow brick road for the final time at the New York premiere of Wicked: For Good this evening, bringing their two-year press tour to a close.

If you were expecting the full-blown pink Glinda fantasy, Ariana only gave it to us three-quarters of the way. The layered tulle skirt of this Schiaparelli Haute Couture gown certainly delivered the sugary fairytale moment—but the bodice? Jet-black. Structured and finished with delicate lace accents and a bow detail that added just enough contrast without breaking the spell.

Was this a prelude to how the film ends, with Glinda and Elphaba united? Or simply Ariana telling us, “This is still Glinda… just with a twist.”

The corset is easily the most fascinating part of the gown. In some photos it reads completely matte, almost like velvet, but when the light hits at the right angle, the intricate pleating reveals itself.

Some will wish she ended in full pink. I think this is stronger. The gown acknowledges the Glinda mythology without being trapped by it. It’s part fantasy, part reset.

Swarovski jewels and a her signature ponytail completed her look.
