Monica Barbaro Wore Dior To The ‘After The Hunt’ Venice Film Festival Premiere

Monica Barbaro was on hand to support her beau Andrew Garfield at the After The Hunt Venice Film Festival premiere this evening.

As Dior ambassador, she was, of course, dressed in custom Dior, which followed the same emerging codes we’ve seen lately: precise pleats, a sharp reverse collar, and a v-shaped open back.

My hesitation isn’t about the design direction—Jonathan Anderson’s debut collection for Dior womenswear is still to come, and there’s no doubt it will extend beyond pleats. My real concern lies in how these fabrics are translating under the glare of cameras. Alba Rohrwacher’s creased Dior Haute Couture look just last night raised an eyebrow, and sadly, Monica’s gown has me feeling the same way.

The fabric is unforgiving, and while Monica is usually a dream in column silhouettes, this dress didn’t play to her strengths. It’s a shame, because she’s one of those actresses who can command a red carpet with the right tailoring.

That said, I’m holding on to some optimism—there’s a chance these early Dior teasers are just warm-ups for something far more exciting. For now, Monica’s look, completed with Bvlgari jewels, leaves me wavering between admiration for the intention and frustration with the execution.
