Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden In Fadi El Khoury Couture – Princess Madeleine & Christopher O’Neill Royal Wedding

The Wedding Of Princess Madeleine & Christopher O'Neill

The Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden, husband Prince Daniel of Sweden and one-year-old Princess Estelle of Sweden attended the wedding of Princess Madeleine of Sweden and Christopher O’Neill this afternoon in Stockholm, Sweden.

Victoria wore a greige rosé silk organza gown with layers of hand-dyed tulle accented with pearls and Swarovski crystals in amethyst and pale grey opal by Swedish couturier Fadi El Khoury.

She accented her stunning gown with Princess Lilian’s Boucheron tiara and corsage, with the Order of the Seraphim on a ribbon with grand star.

Prince Daniel, who carried his wife’s clutch and Estelle’s pacifier, wore a tail coat with the Order of the Seraphim on a ribbon with grand star, while young Estelle attended her first big occasion wearing a white sleeveless dress.

Does Princess Victoria’s gown scream ‘upstage attempt’ to you, or did she celebrate her sister’s nuptials in style?

Totally upstaged her sister. Her tiara was higher than her sister’s. I know she is CP, but this was a day to step back, like the Queen’s example and let her sister have the spotlight. I think carrying Estelle was the give away. Daddy should have carried her instead of her purse. Made her husband look pathetic. Queen Elizabeth never humiliated Prince Phillip like that.

As it looks to someone that princess Victoria upstaged her sister, there is nothing wrong with it:

We should have in minds that Victoria is the Crown Princess and following old royal protocol she, in a matter of fact, made honneur to her sister by attending her marriage.

She is No.1. and it should be clear that she is the future Queen and central personne on every meeting.

Fantastic, jawdropping, beautiful look. I love it more than the wedding dress. BDOTY contender–right at the top of my list!!! Perfection.

In Sweden its normal to bring children, even toddlers to a wedding in the family. They’re very welcome and almost expected to be there for atleast part of the evening. So for Viktoria and Daniel to bring their daughter shouldnt be seen as an atempt to upstage the bride, who surely wanted her niece to be there, it just shows they’re a pretty normal swedish family… how ever normal a royal couple can be

I don’t care if you’re royalty or not, only the bride should wear a gown with a train to a wedding. On anyone else it screams “look at me” and risks upstaging the bride.

That said, it is a beautiful gown.

    • Katherine October 29, 2013 at 17:16 #

Are you an expert on Royal Swedish wedding etiquette? I did not think so. You cannot compare this with Jane Smith’s wedding in New Jersey. I don’t know if you looked at any of the pictures, but many female guests, including Queen Silvia, wore dresses with trains. Silvia is almost 70 (b. 1943), and whilst she looks fantastic, a low-cut ball gown similar to Victoria’s would not have been age-appropriate. Why aren’t you condemning Princess Marta Louise, Crown Princess Mette-Marit, oh and Princess Madeleine herself who wore a bright blue ruffled ball gown with train to Crown Princess Victoria’s wedding?

My recommendation is to do some research before spouting nonsense.

  6. amy June 10, 2013 at 13:38 #

The dress is fine, not the best color but still gorgeous. i don’t think she was necessarily trying to upstage her sis but the train is a bit long. It almost looks bridal. Anyway all eyes were still on the bride no biggie. The baby is too cute

  7. Emma Andersson June 10, 2013 at 12:15 #

Yes, of course she was upstaging her sister! From the side it even looks like a wedding gown in its shape. That extremely lavish dress speaks for itself, and the fact that she chose to bring her very small child to the wedding. Totally unnecessary but oh so perfect when you want an attentiongrabber. SHAME on you. BAD sister.

It is common knowledge in Sweden that the Crown Princess has always been greatly envious of her sister’s beauty, so a bit of a shaky relationship perhaps, and this spectacle of hers only serves to reinforce that view.

I thought the dress was absolutely gorgeous, and appropriate for a royal wedding. As far as I’ve heard, the sisters are not as close as Prins Carl-Philip and Victoria are, but seeing as Madde lives on a different continent this is not strange, and they’re known to spend loads of time together when they can.

  8. designguystlouis June 10, 2013 at 06:01 #

Not upstaging. Victoria’s the Crown Princess of Sweden. This is not a typical wedding. They’re royalty! It’s the norm for them.

  9. Reez June 10, 2013 at 02:10 #

her baby is her best accessory and look at her husband’s clutch!

  10. Fanny June 9, 2013 at 19:47 #

At Victoria’s wedding Madeleine wore an even bigger gown in bright blue. I don’t think it’s a competition, these girls are used to big gowns, trains etc.
And I think they both looked gorgeous!

  11. Kathy June 9, 2013 at 19:35 #

This gown looks like it weighs about 50 pounds, and the color is not doing her any favors. I like that it’s opulent and it makes a statement, but it’s just too heavy and dated for my liking.

  12. Jess2 June 9, 2013 at 15:17 #

LOVE! Crown Princess Victoria sure knows how to deliver, what a stylish family. I think she looks absolutely breathtaking and I don’t think this is an upstaging look. I’m sure there would have been conversations between the sisters about the dress to ensure there was no upstaging. Princess Madeline definitely held her own, she too was breathtaking.

  13. Kate June 9, 2013 at 04:17 #

This is not event-appropriate. I don’t care that she’s the future queen—the CURRENT queen wore something much more understated, but stunning and embellished.
Victoria’s train is much too long. She is a GUEST at the wedding, no matter what her title. This should’ve been toned down. Perhaps for a grand reception I could be okay with it, but not the ceremony.

    • helene June 9, 2013 at 10:03 #

She is not just A GUEST Kate…..she is her sister!! and futur Queen of Sweden. I think she looks gorgeous, her dress is very much appropriate and the choice is brillant!

      • Kate June 9, 2013 at 16:17 #

My original comment made it clear that I already know who she is, thanks.
This is for a reception, not the ceremony. She should look to what the current queen is wearing as a rule of thumb. The train needs to be shortened.

        • oui June 9, 2013 at 16:39 #

This *is* for the Church Ceremony.
For the Reception, she wore the grecian-look Jenny Packham RTW Spring.

    • oui June 9, 2013 at 16:37 #

I don’t think the current queen is necessarily a rule of thumb trainwise… if the current queen wears a train it won’t be age-appropriate. plus, the other guests also have trains, so if she has a short train, she will be “the same” as the other non-family guests (and some even ranked lower than her). I think Victoria’s dress is appropriate. In the vidoes of the things happening inside, it looks much more muted and even less showy than out in the sun. The one I’m throwing shade at is Marie Chantal the (deposed) Crown Princess of Greece. WHITE? OFF-WHITE? NO!

    • KatieKate June 9, 2013 at 16:40 #

    • Emma Andersson June 10, 2013 at 12:24 #

I agree with you. The dress was inappropriate and I think she deliberately upstaged her sister. No one else wore such a dress, not even the Queen.

Victoria has always been envious of her sister’s beauty, so the saying goes in Sweden. I guess there is truth to it. Why else pull a stunt like that? Oh, and bringing the small child..brilliant move..

  14. Pedro June 9, 2013 at 03:20 #

    Epic look

  15. Fashion Guru June 9, 2013 at 02:34 #

Haha. This woman knew what she was doing. Between this grand dress, the styling and accessories ( and by accessories, include the damn cute baby), this was a tour de force showdown— which I think she won, by a baby.

  16. Leo June 8, 2013 at 23:35 #

BDOTW. Maybe one of the BDOTY. Breathtaking.

  17. MaddyEliza June 8, 2013 at 23:24 #

PPS. I just love that Prince Daniel is carrying Estelle’s pacifier, hehe 🙂

  18. MaddyEliza June 8, 2013 at 23:23 #

PS. What an adorable and lovely little family 🙂

  19. MaddyEliza June 8, 2013 at 23:23 #

WOW. Who cares if she is trying to upstage the bride?! This is AMAZING!! Mind-blowing, in fact!! My jaw just dropped when I saw this picture. I don’t even have words!! BDOTY-worthy for sure!! Oh my goodness gracious!! I’m just so in love!! It’s just so stunning and gorgeous and regal.
For the record, I don’t think she was trying to upstage the bride, and I don’t think she did. I think that this is her sister’s royal wedding, she is the Crown Princess, and she is dressed appropriately for the occasion. 🙂
    Once again, BDOTY-worthy. I can’t even. I’m in love. 😀

  20. KatieKate June 8, 2013 at 21:24 #

What I want to know is, where are the Duke and Dutchess of Cambridge??

    • MaddyEliza June 8, 2013 at 23:17 #

Edward and Sophie are usually the ones from the BRF sent to these kind of events. I doubt we’ll be seeing William & Kate at something like this anytime soon. It would be delightful though, wouldn’t it? 🙂

      • KatieKate June 9, 2013 at 16:43 #

Thanks, I am in the US, and I am completely unfamiliar with any of the royal protocol.

  21. Joakim June 8, 2013 at 20:50 #

The designer is Fadhi El Khoury, a Swedish couture designer

    • Catherine Kallon June 8, 2013 at 21:07 #

      many thanks

  22. Marie June 8, 2013 at 19:58 #

Love the dress! Stunning shape and the colour is beautiful. Swedish TV reported that it was designed by Fadi el Khoury, a Swedish designer. Truly beautiful!

  23. Dhppy June 8, 2013 at 19:56 #

I think this does upstage the bride, though I doubt that was the intention. Princess Victoria will be the reigning monarch someday, so she needs to turn it out at the big events. When she heard her sister was going with Valentino, I doubt she realized the result would be so sweet and low key. The sketches certainly made the gown seem grander than it actually appeared to be.

  24. Christine June 8, 2013 at 19:47 #

    So beautiful.

  25. Jolene June 8, 2013 at 19:46 #

Toooooo heavy. This colour doesn´t favour her.

  26. Abril June 8, 2013 at 19:25 #

I don’t think she upstage the bride at all. This is a royal wedding and Victoria is the Crown Princess of Sweden. Protocol would have dictacted that she wears a dress as such with the trail as well as the tiara. Different wedding non-royal,then it would be a different story. Beside Madeline is the prettiest princess in europe, so all eyes on her no matter what she wears. The dress is so incredibly beautiful and elegant; Victoria looked sensational. As others have mentioned the one person that definitely upstaged the bride was princess Estelle, she was so cute in her little chair, she is like a doll!

  27. Kyriaki - Cyprus June 8, 2013 at 19:15 #

I would kill my sister if she wore this stunning gown instead of me! It definitely goes to the list of this year’s favourite!

  28. Kat June 8, 2013 at 19:14 #

I’m pretty sure that NO-ONE thought that she was upstaging the bride, even for a second. As soon as Madeleine arrived all eyes were on her. It was the most extravagant of all the guests, but I think that’s suitable for the bride’s sister. And the colour is so muted that it’s not an attention-seeking dress, even if it was gorgeous.

  29. CreoleLady June 8, 2013 at 19:03 #

I haven’t seen the bride yet, hoping the wedding dress is magnificent. I would think that she would have her sister’s approval. Plus, she is the Crown Princess so I am not sure how that factors into the equation (I’m inclined to give her a pass, unlike the tacky white-wearing wedding guests).

  30. maggy June 8, 2013 at 18:44 #

If anybody tried to upstage the bride, it was Estelle and she was quite successful at it 😉
I think Victoria looked gorgeous and in my eyes the gown is absolutely appropriate.

    • noo June 8, 2013 at 18:52 #

I agree about Estelle! I wanted to watch a live feed just of her and her cute little chair!

  31. dressaddict June 8, 2013 at 18:42 #

The dress is breathtaking. I adore it, the beading and the lace are exquisit. I would’ve worn something just as beautiful if I were the Crown Princess and if the wedding I was attending were my sister’s 😉

  32. Maria S. June 8, 2013 at 18:41 #

She looks gorgeous! Stunning dress, I am sorry to say I prefer it over the wedding gown. She is upstaging the bride a little bit, but as someone else pointed out above she is the crown princess.

Also, can I take a moment to express how sweet and cute those pictures are? She is holding the baby, her husband is carrying her clutch bag and the pacifier… Plus they both look gorgeous in what they are wearing. Such a sweet family moment.

    • KatieKate June 8, 2013 at 21:23 #

      My thoughts exactly!

  33. kane June 8, 2013 at 18:35 #

I absolutely love this–my favourite of the event! Does this upstage the bride then? I don’t think so, Madeleine looked stunning, perfect for the occasion, but stylistally this is closer to what I like (I only felt Lilian’s tiara was a bit too high up in the air, even the lower band, but maybe this is how it needs to be worn).

Estelle is cute as a button and her little chair was priceless!

    • kane June 8, 2013 at 18:37 #

      “stylistally”? Oh dear…

  34. Prudence June 8, 2013 at 18:34 #

ahah sadly she did upstage her sister, this looks much better than her sisters wedding dress. I am sure it wasnt intentional though…well lets hope it wasnt.

  35. molly June 8, 2013 at 18:28 #

Surely she and her sister discussed the gowns before hand. Victoria is the crown princess and going big is what is expected of her. She was hardly trying to “upstage” her sister. This is what you wear to a royal wedding, go big or go home. She looks absolutely stunning, and I love the tiara with that gown. And how cute is little Estelle? All she is missing is her own tiara!

  36. Chisyelda June 8, 2013 at 18:23 #

I think it’s a lovely dress, but it’s kind of upstaging the bride. Not appropriate to wear to a wedding. There are many other beautiful dresses that would not upstage the bride. Shame on her.

  37. Yeliz June 8, 2013 at 18:18 #

The gown is a very beautiful piece and I love the tiara. I don’t see an attempt to upstage her sister. Although she looked very stunning and regal, all eyes were still on Madeleine.
Princess Estelle was so adorable during the whole ceremony, especially when she started to cry when her mother didn’t sat next to her anymore. I also loved that little chair which was for her.

    • Quinn June 8, 2013 at 18:37 #

I looked at the rest of the pictures on getty and I have to agree with u. If it were the wedding of someone beside the royals, then I would say that its upstaging, but this is the royal wedding. every attendees have the access to the most beautiful gown and she chose one of them that makes her look good.

All eyes are still on the beautiful bride.

  38. gina June 8, 2013 at 18:10 #

its seems to similar in shape to the brides dress. in white it would have been a wedding dress. a bit much.
