Even though Claire has been on something of a style expansion lately, stepping outside the labels and silhouettes we most closely associate with her, I was still surprised to see her arrive wearing this look from the Matières Fécales Fall 2026 collection.

The Canadian label has been building momentum ever since Lady Gaga brought the brand to the Grammy Awards red carpet earlier this year. While this look doesn’t carry the same level of provocation as some of the collection’s more extreme runway moments – or Demi Moore’s headline-grabbing Cannes appearance – it still feels like a notable choice for Claire.

What makes it work is that the brand’s conceptual edge has been filtered through a silhouette that remains familiar. The crisp white shirt grounds the look in something recognisable, while the sculpted satin corset and dramatic grey tulle skirt introduce an off-kilter quality that feels playful rather than confrontational.

There is also something about the setting that helps. SXSW has always felt more open to experimentation than a traditional film premiere. The festival sits at the intersection of film, music, technology and creative culture, making it one of the few places where a look like this can feel unexpected without appearing out of place.

The contrast between Claire’s understated public persona and a label known for pushing boundaries is what ultimately makes this memorable. Had she worn something predictable, it would have disappeared into the background. Instead, she delivered one of her most surprising fashion choices in recent memory while still looking entirely like herself.

For me, that’s exactly what makes this a successful risk.
