Olivia Rodrigo Wore Peggy Moffitt’s 1971 Rudi Gernreich Dress To BBC Radio Studios

Olivia Rodrigo was spotted at BBC Radio 1 this morning promoting her upcoming album, You Seem Pretty Sad For A Girl So In Love, wearing a piece of fashion history that felt perfectly aligned with her playful approach to style.

The singer stepped out in Peggy Moffitt’s 1971 Rudi Gernreich black-and-white polka-dot mini dress, complete with the attached trompe-l’œil lime-green vest. More than 50 years after it was created, the look still feels surprisingly fresh.

Part of that comes down to Gernreich himself. The designer spent much of his career challenging ideas about what fashion could look like, favouring bold graphics, unconventional silhouettes and a sense of humour that often ran through his work. This dress captures that spirit perfectly. The oversized polka dots already make a statement, but the faux vest layered over the top pushes it into something far more mischievous.

That playful quality is what makes this feel so right for Olivia. While many pop stars lean into sleek minimalism or overt glamour during album campaigns, Olivia has consistently built her image around youthful rebellion, vintage references and a refusal to take fashion too seriously.

There is also a connection to her music. The contrast between the sweet retro silhouette and the almost cartoonishly bright green vest mirrors the emotional contradictions that have become central to her songwriting. Her albums often bounce between romance and heartbreak, confidence and insecurity, sincerity and sarcasm. Even the title You Seem Pretty Sad For A Girl So In Love suggests that same push-and-pull.

Styled with white knee-high white socks and chunky black heels, the look leaned fully into the mod-inspired energy.

We have seen a lot of celebrities pulling from the archive, but here, Olivia has found a vintage look that reflects her personality rather than simply wearing it for nostalgia’s sake.

Some archival pieces feel locked in their era. This one still feels ready for a pop star promoting a new album in 2026. And that is probably the best compliment you can give a 1971 dress.
