How to Style Jumpsuits

Jumpsuits have always been a fashion contradiction. In terms of simplicity, they’re comparable to dresses. While the all-in-one design makes swift work of putting an ensemble together, they can also be perceived as being somewhat challenging to wear.
Then there’s the question of suitability: while there’s a style of shirt, pants and dress to suit every shape and size, some mistakenly believe them to be reserved solely for specific body types. In reality, there’s as many styles of jumpsuits as there are other garments. Here’s how to style them.
Start With the Basics
If you’re just starting out with this look, try something that you can dress up or down as you please (fashion brand Quince is a great choice for neutral-toned linen pieces that look as cool as they feel). While you might have dreams of emulating Harry Styles’ red carpet looks, it’s best to try something more low-key to start.
Find Your Fit
There’s several key elements involved in finding the perfect jumpsuit: neckline, sleeve, waistband and pant style. Finding the right combination of these will ensure that you find one that you’ll love, but to start, here’s a look at some of the most versatile styles to suit every body:
- A v-neck or wrap style jumpsuit is universally flattering, defining the waist and elongating the upper body. How low you go depends on the size of bust (in general, the larger the bra size, the deeper the V). This style also looks great layered over long-sleeved tops for winter, too.
- Palazzo or flared styles help to create a sleeker silhouette, but tend to emphasize shorter legs. If you find this is the case, pair with platform heels, as Florence Pugh did with her scarlet Moschino glam-punk look, complete with chunky gold accessories.
- If you are petite, avoid anything too long and flowy, as not only can this create a potential tripping hazard, it can also overwhelm smaller body shapes, as can large, bold patterns. Instead, think more in terms of sleeker-fitting, cropped styles in a simple monochromatic style or small print.
- Tailored styles honor the lines of rectangular body shapes while additions such as belt details let you add curves in all the right places. Boilersuits, while frequently associated with mechanics, are also favored by Gigi Hadid, whether in casual or more glamorous styles.
For detailing, frills, statement sleeves and wide necklines (such as off-the-shoulder or strapless styles) all add width, while details such as vertical stripes or v-necks elongate the silhouette.
How to Style Them
As discussed, a basic, neutral jumpsuit is the most versatile of them all, making it a great choice for a day-to-night look; simply switch out the sneakers for a pair of heels. For other styles, pay attention to the amount of detail already there: a patterned jumpsuit paired with statement jewelry could look too busy, for example, but when worn with something simpler like a pair of hoop earrings, it creates a chicer, more balanced look.
For casual ensembles, denim or moto-style jackets are great for wearing with sneakers or sandals, while more structured styles like blazers or longer styles like tailored duster coats add a touch of formality, making them suitable for work or evening wear.
