Aishwarya Rai Bachchan In Michael Cinco Couture – ‘Okja’ Cannes Film Festival Premiere

Dear Aishwarya Rai Bachchan,

There has never been a more perfect red carpet moment than this.

In my 10 (-1) years of RCFA, I have never been so moved by one gown, one woman.

I knew you would bring the magic of Cannes back to the fore; and you did so in breath-taking fashion wearing a Michael Cinco Fall 2017 Couture dress from the Dream of Versailles collection this evening at the ‘Okja’ premiere.

For that I will be eternally grateful, as you will always be my Cannes Queen.

All bets are off. This is my favourite look of the year.

BDOTY! Seriously, where do you go from here? The glitterati may as just wear bin bags from now on čśë

Beautiful commentary Catherine – your passion is so lovely to see xx

  2. MCF May 21, 2017 at 12:42 am #

    Michael Cinco is an ARTIST!!!

  3. Vikash May 20, 2017 at 11:32 am #

This is what Cannes is meant to be about. No more boring LV looks and leather jackets please! Hair, make-up, gown, attitude – check. Aishwarya is something else!

  4. yumey May 20, 2017 at 11:05 am #

    Aishwarya looks magnificent!
    I’m speechless!

  5. Pheephee May 20, 2017 at 5:48 am #

Yes!!! This is pretty much everything! I LOVE this so so much. Its drama, beautiful, and so perfectly Cannes.
The more pictures I find on the internet of this the more in love I fall.
And her earlier 2 looks were also extremely beautiful….
    She is a Cannes Queen!

  6. Shweta May 20, 2017 at 4:50 am #

I’d want love to know what you thought of her green Yanina Couture dress from earlier in the day. Very refreshingly different abs unexpected of her, I thought.

  7. Crystalline May 20, 2017 at 2:03 am #

Gorgeous dress. A show-stopper really. But am I the only one thinkinh that this dress is more suitable for someone younger? It looks a little bit too twee for a 43 years old lady. IMHO.

    • charlotte May 20, 2017 at 3:15 am #

    • Nat39 May 20, 2017 at 3:20 am #

Well, she looks incredible and is selling it like a star, not an “older lady”.

    • Gaurav May 20, 2017 at 5:44 am #

      Ageist much?

    • Sanya May 20, 2017 at 7:14 am #

Please don’t get this wrong, but comments like this are so mean, diminishing and anti feminist. Are you saying that women in their 40s should not try to embrace their sexuality and natural beauty? There is absolutely nothing “only for young people” in this dress. She looks amazing.

      • Zineb May 20, 2017 at 10:02 am #

Crystalline said nothing about 40 year old women shouldn’t embrace their sexuality and natural beauty. This is not a sexualized dress. The design of the dress is too twee for a woman her age. It’s a fairy tale Disney inspired dress. Fashion magazines are talking about an “Elsa / Frozen” inspiration.
She looks great but let’s leave any Elsa and Disney connotations to younger celebrities and there’s nothing ageist or anti-feminist about it. Even FC critisized on multiple occasions some older celebrities who gravitate towards twee dresses.

  8. Cindy May 20, 2017 at 2:00 am #

Beautiful gown – yes, but it takes her over. You use her. Fashion should make the person personality shine through but this keeps people too far away, conversation impossible.

    • aX December 25, 2017 at 6:15 am #

So your complaint is that the dress is too big? WTF. Fashion makes its own statement and has its own personality. Some things are better left unsaid.

  9. Susie May 20, 2017 at 1:43 am #

I love your passion FC! So grateful that you’re back to cover Cannes.

Your comment made me think that at some point it might be fun to do a poll of the top look of the last 10 years(!!!)

I think Aishwarya looks magnificent here and the look is perfectly executed, but IMHO the gown itself is less interesting than, say, Karolina Kurkova’s 2014 Met Gala gown, which shows that there is a way to do a big gown without going down the traditional princess-y route.

    • charlotte May 20, 2017 at 3:17 am #

I agree with you, word by word.
This gown sure is loud, but I don’t think it will match KK’s Met dress or Liu Wen’s Zac Posen number.

    • Nat39 May 20, 2017 at 5:34 am #

or also Claire Danes comes to mind, for example, with her magical Cinderella moment in Zac Posen that lit up in the dark at the last year MET gala….I love this look from Aishwarya, it’s great, no doubt, but it’s just not that exceptionally special or out of the ordinary compared to others we’ve seen over the years…

      • anonymous as always May 20, 2017 at 1:43 pm #

I really don’t know how I missed this Claire Danes look! Thank you for bringing it up!
Now, that’s what I call an amazing fashion moment!!!!!

  10. SilentVisitor May 20, 2017 at 12:45 am #

It is a beautiful dress but I find it very predictable. I guess I just don’t see how different it is from the myriad of Zuhair Murad dresses.

I think Catherine’s post is the best thing about this look

    • Nat39 May 20, 2017 at 1:18 am #

This is, without a doubt, a beautiful standout and an inspiring moment on the Cannes red carpet, but I’m having similar thoughts – it’s sorta a mix of standard big Elie Saab-Zuhair Murad gowns with a bit of Ashi Studio. I’d be actually excited if someone wore a big Ashi Studio gown where drama is also achieved through architectural construction, not just the size.

      lol…love this

  12. Ramsay May 19, 2017 at 10:44 pm #

It’s OK for me – Not even the best of the day to be honest
It’s predictably pretty – slighly outdated – not novel or interesting
    She looks good still
Though not sure it moves me in any way or I will remember it much
    But again that’s my opinion

  13. Mo May 19, 2017 at 10:30 pm #

BDOTY for sure! I will be thinking about this dress from now until December, when voting opens. Can’t be beat!!

  14. Ani May 19, 2017 at 10:11 pm #

Giving me everything! Showstopping volume, exquisite face, gorgeous detailing!

  15. Schoolbea May 19, 2017 at 9:05 pm #

Well, I have to say I wasn’t completely swayed by this when I first saw the pic, but Catherine’s post really moved me! I think I warmed to it just because of the sheer emotion in her words!

And then I read all the comments and that’s where I realised that this is what I love about this blog, this enthusiasm, this sheer happiness.

So, thank you, Aishwarya Rai. You brought the magic back.

    • Catherine Kallon May 19, 2017 at 9:36 pm #

      Awww….thank you.

I was quite emotional writing it to be honest.

  16. Nadia99 May 19, 2017 at 8:27 pm #

Thank you, Aishwarya for this amazing princess moment. I have been craving one for a long time.

And thank you, Catherine, for your Cannes coverage <3

      Amen to that

  19. Vinnie May 19, 2017 at 7:28 pm #

The moment I saw this on my Instagram feed my jaw was on the floor. She looks like a woman who is ready to rule that carpet, truly angelic. I had sent this picture to every girlfriend.. because man isn’t this just every girl’s dream. This is such a big moment in the course of fashion, I can we won’t realize how big it is now, but trust me this is gonna go down as one of the best moment in fashion history. I’m now just hoping for Sonam Kapoor to show up and blow my mind all over again. That’s all.

  20. Rahul May 19, 2017 at 7:16 pm #

This moment is going down in history. Goddess Aishwarya Rai casting her unparalleled spell at Cannes!
Utterly gorgeous gown which retained its opulence on the Red Carpet; perfectly styled.
Thank You, Catherine, for your exceedingly positive review. This is one glorious moment in fashion to be cherished by all!

  21. TeaAtTwo May 19, 2017 at 7:12 pm #

Trust Aishwarya to give us an epic Cannes moment

  22. Triton May 19, 2017 at 7:06 pm #

I love the dress and volume… just not on her… she doesn’t strike me as the person who can pull off big princess type dresses, there more of a maturity to her.

This would have been the perfect Cinderella dress for the live action film. Or maybe if Elle Fanning or Kiernan Shipka and the likes would have worn it, that might have sold it a bit better.

    • anonymous as always May 19, 2017 at 11:30 pm #

I have to agree… I love the dress but I think I would have love it more on someone else. Still a good look for Aishwarya Rai, overall.
It might not in my BDOTY list, but if it makes Catherine so happy then I am ok if she win the BDOTY of 2017. I mean, the enthusiasm in her post, definitely put a smile on my face!!!

  23. Leandra May 19, 2017 at 7:05 pm #

What an entrance. What a fashion moment. It is like time stopped a bit for her beauty be trully appreciated. I take my hat off. Chapeau!!
(this coming from a woman who hates princesses’ looks )

  24. Malhaar May 19, 2017 at 7:00 pm #

It is absolutely not true that she’s hated here in India. She is an icon. The woman is adored, and you can see why. This was simple and regal all at once.

Girlfriend came late to the party, but SLAYED the red carpet down with this one look alone!! Love the princessy blue ball gown, but the sleek tresses keeps it away from being too mumsy!! The opulent elegance and the refined aura that Aishwarya exudes is simply unbeatable, all hail my former Miss World and all time Bollywood icon!!

  27. amy May 19, 2017 at 6:52 pm #

now that’s an arrival! I don’t even like princess gowns that much but this is gorgeous. the light blue against her skin and the dark hair. good job

  28. Angela May 19, 2017 at 6:45 pm #

I’M SCREAMING!!!!!!!! No one can top this.

  29. adrian May 19, 2017 at 6:44 pm #

I really wish I felt the same way because folks seem to be getting there life. I even searched other images based on one of the comments that this one may not have been the best.

I still find it … very ok. But it’s worth reading and seeing all the swooning. Enjoy!

    • CreoleLady May 19, 2017 at 10:50 pm #

You are not alone. This dress is certainly big. I like the way you but it, it is “very OK”. Well, maybe one had to be there. Fun to read the rhapsodizing though.

    • Lashae May 20, 2017 at 3:29 am #

I agree. Its a pretty dress but I’m so underwhelmed by the whole look

  30. Rima May 19, 2017 at 6:34 pm #

Oh my god Catherine your review couldnt be more perfect!! For some reason she has so many haters in India. This woman!! haters????? Shes our queen!!!!. Best dressed at Cannes of all time!!!..permanent goosebumps!!

    • Catherine Kallon May 19, 2017 at 6:45 pm #

My eyes actually welled up. Such a huge moment

        • Saumya May 20, 2017 at 11:39 am #

I love Aishwarya Rai and this dress is divine on her. I think the reason that so many people in India hate her, is because in a country where women are mostly valued for their looks, she’s managed to back that up with brains. She’s a brilliant business woman and one of the most wildly successful women in India (if not the most successful; not sure about that). And she’s managed to accomplish all this without a man by her side, and without resorting to any kind of cheap theatrics that you see so many women engage in these days.

    • Venus May 20, 2017 at 2:58 pm #

India is a huge country, so there’s bound to be differing opinions. .She sure does have haters, but she has loads and loads of fans too in India. The amount of respect and love she gets in uparalelled. Also she wouldnt have been one of the topmost actors in India for so long without her fan following. Shes considered a synonym for beauty in India.

  31. Rashmi May 19, 2017 at 6:26 pm #

Breathtakingly!! Can u pls pls pls add more pictures of her

  32. Sahara May 19, 2017 at 6:22 pm #

I just want to say the wrong pic was chosen… This is a look with enormously huge amount of magnificent pictures around the web. It’s just a outstanding look! She gives me life with this.

    • Catherine Kallon May 19, 2017 at 6:43 pm #

I’m really disappointed by this comment.

Firstly, I am blogging this event live on my own and secondly, I am using the first pictures that come in to publish to you as quickly as possible.

You really know how to take the wind out of someones sails

      • Clancy May 19, 2017 at 6:51 pm #

Haters gonna hate!! This dress and this woman could look good in anyyy picture, from anyyyy angle. That is all!!! Carry on. ??

      • Sahara May 19, 2017 at 7:05 pm #

Oh I’m really sorry, actually I reciprocate every single thing you wrote about the look, that’s why I was just concerned people would stop cherishing this look with just one picture, either way I salute you for your dedication. I choose your updates over anything, anytime. Love.

    • Nat39 May 19, 2017 at 7:36 pm #

I know we can all get overexcited sometimes čÖé but it’s actually a very good shot, the angle and everything…

  33. Manuella May 19, 2017 at 6:19 pm #

    Cinderella would be jealous

  34. AnnieOh May 19, 2017 at 6:19 pm #

    literally got chills! Amazing

  35. Athena May 19, 2017 at 6:18 pm #

YES! This is going straight to the top of my BDOTY list. I love that she is giving less well known designers exposure at a event like Cannes

  36. Vinicius May 19, 2017 at 6:17 pm #

I can tell that you are typing from heaven FC, because she just kill us all, i have no words, this woman its from another planet, she is the defenition of PERFECTION, Cannes without her isn’t Cannes at all

  37. Nat39 May 19, 2017 at 6:17 pm #

    Wow, this is show-stopper.

    • Nat39 May 19, 2017 at 8:52 pm #

..although I can’t shake off a feeling that it could’ve been any other big Elie Saab gown…I’m reserving my final WOWs for Sonam hopefully and Fan (who isn’t out of the picture yet).

  38. Caroline May 19, 2017 at 6:09 pm #

  39. Chris May 19, 2017 at 6:08 pm #

I’m not usually a fan of princess gown silhouettes, but even I can’t deny the impact of Aishwarya at Cannes. If you have to be a princess on the carpet, at least be the biggest couture princess ever, I guess. She looks spectacular.
I don’t think it’s gonna make my BDOTY list and not sure it’s gonna be my favorite look of the day (from what I saw, Jessica Chastain and Rihanna looked awesome), but as I said, I *do* love it.

  40. Ale May 19, 2017 at 6:07 pm #

I fall in love with this dress when I saw it on the runway. The skirt is a bit weird on this picture, but she looks gorgeous.

  41. meme May 19, 2017 at 6:06 pm #

OMG. This is sheer perfection. She looks AMAZING!!!

  42. dedel May 19, 2017 at 6:06 pm #

OH MA GOD. I’m bending the knee. And that make up too ! Everything is perfect

  43. Charlotte May 19, 2017 at 5:58 pm #

To be honest, I’m not really sure I like the dress, yet this is perfect.
    And, finally, something Cannes worthy!!

  44. Anu May 19, 2017 at 5:58 pm #

No words to describe this woman. Her other 2 looks were also breathtaking.

  45. Alina May 19, 2017 at 5:57 pm #

This look, her presence, this moment… Truly cathartic.

  46. cindy May 19, 2017 at 5:57 pm #

she’s always killing it, i love this gown! although i’m not sure about the hair… a top knot or something would be cleaner, no?

    • Catherine Kallon May 19, 2017 at 6:04 pm #

I think the hair keeps it current. I top knot may have taken this down a prissy, mumsy route. This is modern princess

      • Chris May 19, 2017 at 6:17 pm #

        I agree, love the hair.

  47. Carol May 19, 2017 at 5:57 pm #

That’s all I say from the hair to the gown.

That eternally beautiful (an overused word for just attractive people) face can launch a thousand ships.

  48. Shanaya May 19, 2017 at 5:56 pm #

She is beyond stunning but I do wish she’d add some jewellery to her looks. Just an observation but Why is she not wearing the well known designers? Never heard of any of the ones she wore today.

  49. Jui May 19, 2017 at 5:55 pm #
