John Malkovich Embraces Textural Tailoring at the ‘Wild Horse Nine’ LA Screening
John Malkovich attended the Wild Horse Nine LA special screening last night.
The actor might not be the first name that comes to mind when discussing celebrity style, but as we’ve seen since he kicked off this press tour in Venice, he is increasingly deserving of a place in the conversation.
Take this Aubero Lace Preservation coat, featuring an intricate patchwork of black, ivory and grey lace motifs, layered over a white shirt and the label’s black Pelton trousers.
What makes this coat even more interesting is how it was created. Aubero, founded in 2022 by Julian Louie, specialises in transforming vintage and antique textiles into contemporary menswear. Each Lace Preservation coat is individually cut and quilted by hand, incorporating vintage and antique lace beneath layers of nylon tulle. No two pieces are identical.
What I love about John’s style is his appreciation for texture, interesting fabrics and pieces that have a personality of their own. This coat is a perfect example. There is so much happening across the surface, yet it never feels at odds with the man wearing it.
And I think a lot of the credit belongs to his stylist, Jeanne Yang, who clearly understands that dressing someone like John Malkovich isn’t about following conventional menswear rules.
He has such a distinctive personality, an extraordinary career and an eccentricity that has always been part of his appeal. Jeanne knows how to reflect all of that through his clothes, choosing pieces that are interesting, sometimes unconventional, but always believable on him.
While plenty of actors settle into predictable tailoring, he continues to embrace fashion with a curiosity that makes his red carpet appearances fascinating.
I never expected John Malkovich to become one of the men whose fashion choices I actively look forward to seeing, but here we are.
