Michaela Coel Wore Chanel To ‘The Christophers’ New York Premiere

Michaela Coel is back on the red carpet – and back on our screens – promoting The Christophers, in which she stars alongside the great Ian McKellen, attending the New York premiere at Metrograph on Wednesday.

We’ve seen the British actress deliver her fair share of dramatic moments over the years – from Schiaparelli Haute Couture at the 2023 Met Gala to that Ferragamo hooded look for the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever LA premiere – but this return feels notably pared-back in Chanel.

By letting the Chanel black raffia skirt from the 2026 Coco Beach Collection take focus – with its textured finish and softly frayed hem – she builds the look from the ground up. The styling is intentionally simple: a white vest top and Chanel’s black-and-white pumps, which I continue to grade on a case-by-case basis, and they work perfectly here.

Runway or lookbook styling can often sway opinion either way. Some might argue that this needed the layered Chanel necklace seen in the brand imagery, but I prefer Michaela edit. The black resin earrings feel more aligned with Michaela’s approach – stripped-back, personal, and not dictated by the lookbook.

Her skin is luminous, which becomes the strongest accessory here. A statement necklace would have shifted the focus, taking away from what makes this feel so effective in the first place.
