Lucy Boynton Wore Celine To The London Photocall For ‘A Cruel Love: The Ruth Ellis Story’

Today, Lucy Boynton stepped out for the photocall of her new drama series, A Cruel Love: The Ruth Ellis Story, held at The Charlotte Street Hotel. Given that the series is set in 1955 London’s club scene, I can only imagine the costume designers had a field day dressing Lucy—after all, she wears vintage aesthetics like no other.

That brings us to today’s look: a houndstooth ensemble from Celine, featuring a double-breasted u-shaped waistcoat, a matching pleated skirt, and a frill-collared shirt with a bow tie. It’s polished, well-tailored, and undeniably on brand for Lucy. But I have to say… I’m struggling to warm up to it.

We know Lucy can do ‘60s preppy with flair, but this? This is giving 1930s school uniform. And not the charming, Atonement (specifically, the early scenes with Briony Tallis in her strict schoolgirl attire) kind—more like “she’s stuck in detention for talking back to the headmistress.” It’s strict, it’s sombre, and it’s missing that touch of whimsy that makes her retro-inspired looks so fun.

That said, I do love the Celine Judy Mary Jane slingbacks. Classic, chic, and the only thing keeping this from feeling too rigid.
