Two Sisters, Two Style Stories: Rooney & Kate Mara at TIFF
After debuting Bucking Fastard at the Venice Film Festival a fortnight ago, sisters Rooney Mara and Kate Mara brought their film to the Toronto International Film Festival, attending the premiere on Monday.

Familiar Territory
Rooney Mara wasn’t in black, but both the silhouette and designer were firmly in familiar territory, as she wore a Givenchy by Sarah Burton Spring 2027 lace cape-back mini dress.
If you’re having a major case of déjà vu, it might be because the cape-back design is similar to the black strapless Givenchy dress Rooney wore to The Voice of Hind Rajab premiere in Venice last year.

I like how the white lace gives the familiar silhouette a lighter feel. The slicked-back hair, barely-there jewellery and white pointed-toe sandals are all part of her established red carpet language. It works, and she looks great, but I’m starting to wonder if familiarity is doing some of the heavy lifting here. After immediately thinking of her black Givenchy dress from Venice last year, I’m left asking whether I love this look on its own merits, or because Rooney has made this aesthetic so completely hers.

Sister Act
Kate Mara hasn’t worn her signature mini dress for three consecutive appearances now, as she continues to explore hemlines that fall below the knee.
This time, she appeared to take a cue from her sister’s love of black and lace, wearing a Dolce & Gabbana Fall 2026 satin-lace bralette with a coordinating black silk-satin skirt.
After years of seeing her favour minis, it’s interesting to watch her explore something different, although I am missing her love of prints and colour here. It reminds me of Rooney’s Carol press tour with Cate Blanchett in 2015, when Cate suddenly started wearing far more black than we were used to seeing from her at that time. Is Rooney’s aesthetic rubbing off on Kate during this press tour?
Dolce & Gabbana patent sandals completed her look.
