Michelle Obama Honours Her Mother In Emotional Custom Acne Studios Look
Former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama spoke on stage at a stakeholders event for the Barack Obama Presidential Center in Chicago ahead of the centre’s public opening on June 19.
While the event celebrated a major milestone years in the making, it was Michelle Obama’s outfit that unexpectedly delivered one of the day’s most emotional moments.
The former First Lady wore a custom Acne Studios look inspired by Paul Kooiker’s portraiture featured in the brand’s Fall 2026 collection, with her skirt bearing a portrait of her late mother, Marian Robinson.
What could have been a striking fashion statement became something far more personal.
Speaking to the audience, Michelle revealed, “I’m giving him some time because this beautiful skirt that my stylist Meredith Koop picked out, that is my favourite portrait of my mom. He didn’t know it existed until just a few minutes ago.”
The revelation visibly moved Barack Obama, turning a discussion about architecture, community and legacy into a reminder of the family at the heart of it all.
I speak a lot on here about how fashion often serves as a form of storytelling, but rarely does it tell a story this intimate. The Acne Studios design became a tribute, a memory and a conversation piece all at once. The portrait wasn’t included for shock value or attention. It was a daughter carrying her mother with her during one of the most significant moments in the family’s history.
There is also something especially fitting about Marian Robinson being part of this occasion. A lifelong South Side Chicago resident, she remained a constant presence throughout the Obama years while largely avoiding the spotlight herself. To see her image honoured at an event celebrating a presidential centre built on Chicago’s South Side felt particularly meaningful.
The opening of the Barack Obama Presidential Center will stand as part of the Obamas’ legacy for generations to come. Michelle’s tribute ensured that Marian Robinson’s legacy was woven into that story too.
