The history books will show that in 2021 Andra Day was a Best Actress nominee; a title she thoroughly deserved for her performance in the film ‘The United States Vs. Billie Holiday.’
But fashion wise – especially when putting them all together – it was a total disaster, and thoroughly underwhelming.
I mean how are you going to wear three different versions of the same dress, and a beach dress during awards season?
And how are you nominated in the Best Actress category yet Armani Prive, Dior, or Louis Vuitton are not loaning – or in the latter case – creating a custom piece for you?
Granted a big label doesn’t guarantee a big moment, as she had two Chanel looks which didn’t really land for me.
Or Regina King whose best look this awards season was from new designer on the block, Christopher John Rogers?
It’s like she started off with hope, then gave up when she realised it wasn’t going to get that gold statue.
I had high hopes that Andra would deliver some fun, and interesting looks, but she gave us nothing. Absolutely nothing, and I’m devastated for her, because who knows when this opportunity will come around again.
Her only great moment came at the ESSENCE Black Women In Hollywood Awards when she wore Jason Rambert’s Aliétte.
