Charlize Theron In Christian Dior Couture – Oscars 2014

Charlize Theron In Christian Dior Couture - Oscars 2014

Charlize Theron attended the 2014 Oscars held at Hollywood & Highland Center on Sunday (March 2) in Hollywood, California.

The actress wore a dramatic black Dior Couture gown, which I will admit I’m still very much on the fence about as I have an issue.

It’s the sheer illusion straps that remind me of those bras with the clear plastic straps preventing me from loving the look.

From the waist down, I’m fully on board with the sheer skirt and tiered hem, which fans out into a dramatic train.

A slick back do and Harry Winston jewels completed her look.

Ugggh yes the first thing I thought of was ‘invisible’ bra straps – terrible, and it makes her shoulders look huge somehow.

I’m not a fan of the material above her bust adjoining the sheer straps. The rest of the dress looks good though.

  3. Christine March 3, 2014 at 01:51 #

This is a no since I can see the Illusion straps.

Love the dress but the necklace is way too much (even if it is a Harry Winston). With the sheer straps, statement earrings and no neck adornment should have been my choice.

I love the bottom half of the dress, but the top part is really unflattering. If it wasn’t so wide and didn’t have those awful straps, I would have loved it all.

I like think the straps are fine and go well with the necklace. theron is possibly my favourite tonight

I was totally loving this when I saw it briefly on TV, but now the illusion straps are so ruining this look for me. I’m kinda sad about that, because it would’ve been a stunning well-styled gown, if not for the straps.

This has a dramatic, vampy vibe. It sure makes a change from all the nude and blush confections. I love the silhouette, particularly the skirt and train. It is a pity the bodice was not structured to do without the straps, but a great look nonetheless.

  9. Nat39 March 3, 2014 at 02:04 #

Agree with everyone. The illusion straps are horrendous.

  10. Kate March 3, 2014 at 02:06 #

The straps don’t bother me as much as the material leading into the straps–I wish the bodice had glided up to points instead of looking so cut-off and awkward.

I think that the sheer straps ruin it. If I look at the close-up I like it, but from far I agree with you FC, it looks like those bras with the plastic straps (which I find sooo tacky).

The straps dont bother me too, and I really like her in this dress, ja’dore

something about this dress is dated/un-fresh to me.

  14. EmmaWoodhouse March 3, 2014 at 02:43 #

Beautiful hair and makeup, and she is one of few who look distinctive in black, but this dress is super tacky imo.

  15. cherrysoftness March 3, 2014 at 02:51 #

She’s so statuesque, I bet this looked stunning in person, almost larger than life.

  16. Moxie March 3, 2014 at 03:56 #

    Love everything but the straps.

  17. Jess2 March 3, 2014 at 04:06 #

The straps definitely are a little off putting but I adore the rest! Great styling!

  18. Gabrie1a March 3, 2014 at 04:06 #

So much drama, so on trend, you can look at this dress and say years from now, that was 2014.

  19. liz March 3, 2014 at 04:11 #

WHY?!!! It is the so-called culture shock in aesthetics? Why there are people hating this look?! I think it is the clear winner of the Oscar night. BDOTW

      I’m confused too

  20. Alina March 3, 2014 at 04:53 #

Looks like a Zac Posen dress for me.

  21. snowlion March 3, 2014 at 05:59 #

The top of this is just awful, it looks like they ran out of time to put straps on and the resulting effect makes it appear very wide at the top.

  22. Lila March 3, 2014 at 06:06 #

I love this look, illusion straps included, except for the necklace. I agree that a necklace was needed, but this one throws off the balance of the top part of the dress to me.

  23. Liz March 3, 2014 at 06:42 #

WHY has nobody told Jennifer Lawrence that Dior makes dresses like this?? It’s unique and gorgeous and original, something that the gowns that Jennifer chooses never seem to be.

  24. lin March 3, 2014 at 08:38 #

I didn’t realise this dress had illusion straps when I saw it on TV. I loved the dress then, but am a bit disappointed with the ice skating look.

  26. kane March 3, 2014 at 10:26 #

No for me. The only thing I’m doing is looking for the straps not even noticing the dress.

  27. Joy March 3, 2014 at 11:46 #

I rarely don’t like what Charlize is wearing, but I don’t like this dress at all. I can’t get past the plastic straps. So tacky they kill anything good this dress has going on. Oh, and the diamond bling was just too much. I don’t think jewelry should be distracting.

  28. TheDameIntl March 3, 2014 at 15:28 #

Pretty sure Dior can construct a dress like this that doesn’t the the illusion straps… WHY?

  29. Katrin March 3, 2014 at 16:36 #

I feel bad to disagree with almost everybody. This is my favorite of the night. What is wrong with me? I just love the drama of that dress! I didn’t even notice the straps at first, so they don’t bother me at all.

  30. nomoresnow March 3, 2014 at 17:57 #

    she looks SENSATIONAL.

  31. steph March 4, 2014 at 21:58 #

I actually am not crazy about that top layer of sheer skirt.

  32. gabis March 7, 2014 at 12:35 #

With such beauty and flawless styling, hair and makeup is very easy to overlook the awful illusion straps. She’s oozing sophistication here. J’adore head-to-toe.
