Olivia Palermo is the queen of getting it ‘oh so right’ on the red carpet, so why did it all go so horribly wrong at the 2012 New York City Ballet Fall Gala, held at the David H. Koch Theater, Lincoln Center, yesterday evening?
It could be one of the following reasons.
Reason 1: Maybe I am instantly dismissing her Christian Dior Spring 2012 dress because it was not part of the Valentino dress code.
Reason 2: The Christian Dior two-tone asymmetrical gown with a tiered skirt is stumptifying her (making the petite star appear much shorter (and wider) than she actually is).
Reason 3: She opted to wear a statement necklace with an asymmetrical neckline (pet peeve).
Reason 4: That ombre purple-feathered bag, which has worked so well in the past, is an eyesore on this occasion.
Reason 5: All of the above.

She looks both short and wide, which should be next to impossible because she’s so tiny. I also hate when people don’t wear the designer who is hosting the event. It seems disrespectful.
I am bored of her style. I don’t see what the big fuss is about over her.
+1 to everything you said
Let’s not forget the horribly heavy shoes. Sigh.
+2
+3 hahaha, let´s be honest, that´s pretty ugly!
+4. The first Olivia tragedy in recent memory. Not wearing Valentino defies logic and respect.
I am surprised she did not wear Valentino either. This look is a mess. Wow, a mess!
I think she looks amazing and the bag is a lovely addition, I am not sure about the shoes though…
(I really don’t see what is wrong with the necklace and asymetrical neckline)
Her worst look ever!
+1
6. The shoulder pin. If there is to be any success with this dress*, it will be by simplifying, not overaccessorizing.
* I doubt it. This is a riff on a classic Grecian gown, and the black fringe is just silly.
Definitely. And, for me 7) the necklace is too much, and 8) the shoes aren’t helping.
I agree with you, the dress doesn’t need too much accessories, the brooch, the necklace and that ugly bag! No way, and I think she should have worn Valentino.
I’m on board for reason # 5. Great evaluation, FC.
All of the above! This dress was just bad to begin with, it’s almost making Miranda Kerr look stumpy!
No one could make this dress work, it’s horrible
I agree.
It looks lovely on the model but just makes Olivias waist look rather wide!
Also, too many accessories!!
All of the above. This look is an over-accessorised mess.
I’ll go with Reason 5: all of the above. A total mess!
+1
It is the first time ever almost Olivia looks a hot mess, i think it was in this case all of the above FC unfortunately!
All of the above..
I must say I really like the dress on Miranda Kerr, because it suits her perfectly, which is not the case with Olivia´s dress. It is too much fabric for so small frame.
On the other hand, all those accesories are too much: an XXXLLL collar, a purple bag with feathers, a shoulder pin. and two belts (one golden and the other black)!!!!!
I must step into Olivias defense a little bit here:
Its not fair to any woman to be exposed next to a picture of Miranda Kerr wearing the same dress.
Definitely all of the above. I am actually shocked, I never expected such a major misstep from her.
I think she’s wearing two belts….
7. The Belt
In a way its allmost comforting to see that Olivia Palermo is human and can fail to nail an outfit..
What a hot mess. Too much going on. The dress fits poorly and makes her look short and wide. The shoulder pin and necklace are too much together. Either one would have been alright on their own, but not together. And that bag would be cute with a different outfit but is woefully out of place here.
Mojo missing.
Olivia normally looks pretty decent but this look is a huge FAIL!
The dress is making both Miranda & Olivia look frumpy (quite some feat… They’re tiny!!) These two ladies are usually flawless, but this dress is just no no no no no.
Reason 6: Old dowager countess hair.
Reason 7: After Miranda Kerr, no one was gonna look as good in this dress.
Reason 7 explains it all.
That dress is too big on her. You can see the fit is just different on the model and so, there’s more material on Olivia, making her frumpy looking.
The pin next to that necklace is a no-go. She should’ve nixed both and went with a chunky bracelet.
I also feel that the shoes should’ve matched the belt. And that bag…no.
As mch as I dislike Valentino (I try to like it) I see why people are annoyed that she is’t wearing a Ventino gown, but I do believe that her bag is Valentino. However, I think that this outfit is a mess, I don’t like any component even by itself, especially the necklace with the neckline.
I also really wish someone could explain to me why she is famous, given that “The City” finished in 2010.
I like this from the waist up. I like the neckline, the pin, the necklace, the elegant up do, all of it. It’s the rest that causes problems. The belt and bag have nothing to do with this outfit. Most irritatingly, the tiers are not adjusted properly. I just want to go up and straighten it. The third one must be hidden under another or something, it isn’t the same size as the others and that throws me.
#8 The – to be frank – appalling modification to the length which has resulted in the drop of the tiers going from ‘thoughtfully placed to create an illusion of height’ to ‘I pulled three petticoats on in the dark’.
Sad face
For the first time I don’t like what she’s wearing.
Hopefully it’s just a bad day!
Reason 3 is a pet peeve of mine too…
Aside from the purple furry thing and other various annoyances that you mentioned FC, the thing that is irritating me is the fact that the tiers are uneven! I think the fact that they are bunched up is the main reason she looks so stumpy and wide.
It’s just so hard to like it when you see how it should be worn on the model. It’s really amazing how she turned such a beautiful dress into something so messy.
I am big fan of Olivia’s style. This is horrible. The accessories(necklace, brooch, belt, bag shoes) are just toooo much!
