Why The Burberry Trench Coat Never Goes Out Of Style
Just last week, London was basking in sunshine. Arsenal Football Club paraded the Premier League trophy through the streets of North London on an open-top bus. We had our toes out in sandals, summer clothes pulled back into rotation, and every reason to believe the season had finally arrived. Fast-forward a few days and the rain is back, bringing with it the annual wardrobe confusion.

The problem is that, once the summer mindset kicks in, few of us are ready to return to heavy layers. And while the skies may have shifted, temperatures are still hovering high enough to make a winter coat feel excessive. This is exactly where the trench coat earns its place.
This week alone, Ellie Bamber, Daisy Edgar-Jones and Rihanna have all been spotted reaching for a fashion constant: the Burberry trench coat.
Ellie Bamber was caught in the rain in London while promoting Moss and Freud, throwing a classic Burberry Fitzrovia trench over a silky slip dress and ballet flats. The coat brought balance, tempering the delicacy of the dress. Suddenly, an outfit that might have felt too bare for unpredictable weather looked entirely practical.

Daisy Edgar-Jones, meanwhile, styled her Burberry Fitzrovia trench in New York with relaxed denim, a knit casually tied around her shoulders and pointed ankle boots. It served as a reminder that the trench coat is just as convincing off-duty as it is dressed up.

Then there is Rihanna, who approached her Burberry Kensington trench with her usual confidence, layering hers over wide-leg denim, a zip-up top and statement accessories. Even with a baseball cap and oversized sunglasses in the mix, the coat instantly sharpened the look.
That is the real strength of a trench coat, particularly one from Burberry. It works with almost any wardrobe choice, slipping easily over dresses, denim, tailoring and airport looks. It also handles warm-but-wet days better than almost anything else in fashion.
Most importantly, it never really dates. Trends may shift around it, silhouettes may loosen or sharpen, but the trench remains dependable because its appeal sits in function as much as fashion. Few pieces manage to feel classic, practical and current at once, yet this one somehow always does.
If this week’s weather has taught us anything, it is that the trench coat still earns its place long after we think we are finished with outerwear for the season.
