Zendaya’s New Pixie Cut Channels Young Halle Berry

Zendaya’s pixie may have felt like an Emmys reveal, but the story of the cut actually started a few weeks earlier.

Hairstylist Coree Moreno was responsible for the chop, taking Zendaya from the longer bixie she had been wearing earlier in the year to her shortest cut in recent memory. It was quite the change after The Odyssey press tour, where we saw her move through a series of waist-skimming, goddess-inspired hairstyles.

Zendaya gave the pixie its first major public outing at the Prada Paradoxe pop-up in New York last week. On that occasion, the closely cropped cut was styled with soft curls and more volume through the crown, giving us our first indication of just how versatile this new length could be.

Two days later, Moreno completely changed the mood for the Emmys.

For the Emmys, the focus was on giving the classic pixie a more modern feel, with plenty of texture and definition through the top while keeping the sides close to the head.

Moreno began by working Schwarzkopf KERATÎME Multiplex Bonding Deep Repair Detangling Treatment through Zendaya’s hair to prep it for styling. He then reached for Arachne Hair Tools, including his favourite Mini ShineBoost, to start establishing the direction and shape of the pixie.

From there, göt2b Spray Wax was used to create the piece-y, lived-in texture that really defined the finished look, while still keeping the hair soft and touchable. Rather than making every section uniform, the texture through the crown gave the pixie that slightly undone finish that worked so well against the glamour of her Prada gown.

What I love most is how different the pixie looked in the space of just two days. The softer, curlier Prada Beauty version was beautiful, but the Emmys styling completely transformed it. With the tousled crown, shorter sides and Zendaya’s MIKIMOTO Petals earrings on full display, my immediate thought was young Halle Berry.

And that might be my favourite thing about this haircut so far. Zendaya hasn’t simply gone short; she and Moreno are already showing us how many different personalities a pixie can have.

And considering how much fun Zendaya and Coree Moreno have already had moving between bobs, bixies, extensions and now this pixie, I suspect this cut is going to give us plenty more before she decides to change it again.
