Ellie Bamber’s ‘Moss & Freud’ Press Tour Was An Ode To Kate Moss’ ’90s Runway Looks
Ellie Bamber, who stars in the Moss & Freud biopic about the unlikely relationship between supermodel Kate Moss and painter Lucian Freud during the period when he painted her famous nude portrait in the early 2000s, has been promoting the film in London this week.
The press tour has doubled as an ode to the ’90s through archival fashion, but what makes this extra special is that each look was originally worn on the runway by Kate Moss herself, making the references feel especially fitting for a film centred on one of fashion’s most famous models.

The One Show
The first look came courtesy of the Versace Fall 1994 collection, with Ellie wearing a pink cable-knit sweater styled with a metallic green mini skirt, a lilac Aspinal of London Mayfair bag, and yellow Christian Louboutin Sofia Z slingback peep-toes. If this colour combination feels oddly familiar, Margot Robbie wore this same collection during her Barbie press tour, which may explain the instant sense of déjà vu. What makes Ellie’s look especially fun in the context of this press tour is the Kate Moss connection. While not an exact runway recreation, the styling clearly nods to the playful, high-colour spirit of the Versace Fall 1994 collection that Kate modelled, keeping the fashion storytelling tied to the film.

London Premiere
There was more colour-blocking to be had in this archival Calvin Klein Spring 1997 look, featuring a red-and-lime tube top paired with a lacquer jersey long tube skirt. The tube top alone feels like such a defining ’90s staple in its own right, instantly placing the look in a specific era. While Esther Cañadas wore this look on the Calvin Klein Spring 1997 runway, Kate Moss later wore it in the campaign, which makes Ellie’s choice feel especially relevant to the Moss & Freud story. Rather than pulling random ’90s archive pieces, there is a clear thread here, linking Ellie back to Kate’s fashion history while subtly shifting the focus from Kate the celebrity to Kate the model.

Premiere After-Party
This grey knit-and-wool set may carry a Calvin Klein feel at first glance, but the look actually hails from Miu Miu’s Fall 1994 collection. The fine-knit bodice, slim skirt, tonal hosiery, and pumps gave the look a distinctly ’90s mood, while the Kate Moss connection once again tied the styling back to the film’s subject. By this point, the idea behind the wardrobe felt fully realised: not simply recreating famous Kate Moss moments, but revisiting the runway history that helped shape her image in the first place.
I know some of you are somewhat over thematic dressing, but this was a genuinely clever interpretation. For the London Film Festival screening back in October, Ellie wore a Gucci dress once worn by Kate Moss to the 2005 CFDA Awards, and she could have easily continued being inspired by the model’s public appearances. Instead, shifting the focus to Kate’s runway history flips the narrative slightly, acknowledging that this story is about Moss not just as a cultural figure, but as one of fashion’s defining supermodels.
