Anne Hathaway Wore Carolina Herrera To The 2025 Met Gala

Storytelling is truly the magic of the Met Gala, and Anne Hathaway reminded us just how moving that can be—even when the references require a little digging. On a night themed Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, Anne arrived at the Met Gala in a look that might’ve puzzled at first glance. A crisp white shirt and a black-and-white striped column skirt? Where is the theme?

Creative Director Wes Gordon didn’t just pull a look—he crafted a tribute. This ensemble was inspired by none other than André Leon Talley, the undisputed monarch of dandyism and a pillar of Black fashion excellence. Not only was ALT the first to interview Carolina Herrera in an official fashion capacity back in 1981, he remained one of her fiercest supporters throughout his life. That shared history became the beating heart of Anne’s look.

The hand-applied crystal embroidery on the skirt mirrored the elegance of a classic tailored suit, while the oversized cotton shirt—tied just so at the waist—evoked both Carolina’s signature and ALT’s enduring love for the timeless staple. The nods were quiet, deliberate, and deeply respectful.

Thanks to SCAD’s generous access to Talley’s archives, Wes Gordon had the tools to turn fashion into a conversation. And Anne wore it with the kind of understated glamour that makes you lean in.
