Unique Bridal Looks For A Non-Traditional Event
You already know the drill of what it means to have a traditional, classic-style wedding since they are the preferred option for couples getting married. Naturally, they will look different based on the local culture, but you can expect a religious ceremony, a reception that may or may not feature a few speeches, a meal, dancing, and socializing with the other guests. There’s something comforting and undeniably charming about something that is tried and tested, but you might also feel like changing things up a little and having a wedding that feels wholly and entirely yours, or you may just feel like the traditional wedding is simply not for you. Luckily, there is no shortage of things you could do on your special day. After all, it is your wedding, and you’re the one who should be happy with it first and foremost.
There are people holding their weddings with only a few close friends and family in a different country, those who tie the knot during a hike in the mountains, in caves, while bungee jumping, on glaciers, and even underwater. Some want their wedding to have a historical theme so that they may choose the Victorian era or the 1930s. Hot air balloons, an exquisite location in the desert, or a weightless wedding, when you get married in a space with zero gravity, may have sounded impossible not very long ago, but they are now becoming the preferred alternatives for people from all over the world. And since you’re having a non-traditional wedding, it only makes sense to think about getting a non-traditional dress as well. Here are some of the options you might want to consider.

Old-school
If you think breaking the mould and wanting something a little more unconventional during your wedding is a new trend, you should think again. In fact, by doing a little research, you’ll be able to find plenty of inspiration from historical weddings. For example, when Marilyn Monroe married Arthur Miller in New York in 1956, she wore a dress with an empire waist that followed the cut of a pencil skirt, with a ruched bust and a hemline that reached around knee level. Back in 1954, when she married Joe DiMaggio, Marilyn decided she didn’t want a white dress at all and instead chose a dark brown two-piece suit which included a skirt, a jacket, and a white fur collar.
In 1964, Elizabeth Taylor donned a bright yellow dress for her wedding and completed it with a simple hairstyle that included hyacinths. Jane Fonda opted for an A-line minidress, a popular trend in the 60s, and black knee-high boots. When she married Frank Sinatra, Mia Farrow wore a silk faille suit that she already owned, which included a cropped jacket with double-breasted rhinestone buttons and a skirt with a bow at the waistline. Audrey Hepburn ditched white when she was wed to Andrea Dotti, going for a funnel-neck minidress that she paired with white tights, ballet kitten heels, gloves and a headscarf.
Minimal but striking
If you’re not a fan of the large, ballgown-style wedding dresses, you can go for a sleeker and more minimalist style that maintains its striking look. You can choose between the many silhouettes on JJ’s House, such as a dress made from tulle, lace and sequins in a neutral shade and with a discreet train. The mermaid V-neck and floral beading add to the beauty of this simple design and provide the look with texture. A white dress with pinch-pleats, a cutout back and a plunging neckline will also be simple but create a natural swaying effect anytime you move.
If you want something a little more dramatic, you can go for a crepe satin maxi dress with delicate straps, a low back and thigh-high slit. A body-hugging slip dress is the go-to minimalist choice, and there are also wedding dresses that come with an additional cape layer, as they go particularly well with column dresses. You can also complete the look with a pair of opera gloves.
The jumpsuit
But what if you don’t want to say yes to the dress because it doesn’t feel like a comfortable option for you? Enter the bridal jumpsuit and you’ll find many designs to choose from that you’re bound to find something you like. A cinched waist and a fun design detail such as fringed trims on the front can accentuate a classic, sculptural high waist and wide-leg design. Ideally, the detailing will be in a color such as ivory or cream that can complement the white instead of overpowering it. Long-sleeved alternatives also exist, including jumpsuits with sleeves made entirely out of ornate silk or intricate lace patterns. If you believe you need some extra support, search for a jumpsuit that comes with a boned corset. Flared hems are popular in all trouser styles, and some models come with floral-inspired appliques at the top.
Mix and match
Some brides want the freedom to wear two pieces instead of one on their wedding day, and if you share that sentiment, there are many creative ways to build your wedding outfit. A tulle skirt will make you feel like you’ve just stepped out of a fairytale (or a ballet show). They are dainty, pretty and comfortable at the same time. Wear yours with a sequined top and a cape-style, embroidered coat with hook closures. A standard, simple, classic suit featuring trousers and a blazer can be accessorized with bows to make it more festive. You can also create a suit by pairing a strapless gown with a suit jacket. Fabric choices such as boucle or plenty of ruffles can add a sense of whimsy and fun to these otherwise stern sartorial choices so you don’t feel too formal and buttoned up.
Always consider your preference first
Planning a wedding isn’t easy, and finding the perfect dress can cause you to stress out unnecessarily since there are so many beautiful options out there. It’s important to take your preferences into account as the first step and go for something that makes you happy, even if that means doing something that’s a little unexpected. You may not realize how important that is at the moment, but you’ll thank yourself later.
