Lupita Nyong’o attended the ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ fan event held at the Plaza Satélite on Wednesday (November 9) in Naucalpan, Mexico.
The first picture I saw of Lupita at this event was this custom Jonathan Cohen black leather dress.
While I do like the dress, and the De Beers choker, I was left feeling wanting more, as Lupita has worn so many black dresses during this promo tour.
Then I saw that she had a second part of the look, which was a red custom gown by the same designer.
The piece is entitled “Birth of a Rose”, in homage to Lupita and Jonathan’s shared Mexican heritage and upbringing.
Like the blooming of a rose, a red silk faille cape cocooned Lupita, was created to reveal the form fitting leather dress and harness.
The leather harness, designed after Frida Kahlo’s corset, was fashioned with brass buckles in the shape of roses and thorns.
Beneath the harness a strapless dress is revealed, with floral appliques crafted from leather remnants true to Jonathan’s mission to create responsible fashion.
As you know I love to learn the story behind the design, as it gives you a greater appreciation of the end result.
I wish more designers would share this.
You can see the buckle details at the back on her dress in this video.
