Tessa Thompson In Tingyue Jiang & Thom Browne – Build Series & ‘Sorry To Bother You’ New York Premiere

It would appear that Tessa Thompson is undergoing a change of direction style-wise.

Many of you weren’t onboard with her Rosie Assoulin MTV Awards look, so I’m intrigued to find out how you feel about these two latest offerings.

Build Series: If you watched the BOF Summit talk with Elizabeth Saltzman, Jason Bolden and Karla Welch, they all said in unison that they love discovering and breaking new designers. It appears that Tessa’s stylists, Wayman + Micah share that sentiment, as they outfitted Tessa in a dress by Parsons MFA graduate Tinygue Jiang. What I love about this piece is the imperfect elements, like the ripped shoulder and jagged edges. The look feels so raw and exposed, yet beautiful and fashion forward. Brother Vellies ‘Palms’ pump in ostrich feathers with plexiglass heel plus Dylanlex jewels completed the look, along with a single strand of white beads in her braids.

‘Sorry To Bother You’ New York Premiere: There are so many elements to her Thom Brown Spring 2018 look, that I’m not sure where to start. The lines are continually blurred between women’s and menswear, and no one does this better than Thom Browne. I love the semi-sheerness of the plaid fabric and the suspended skirt for a truly unique look. The point at which I found myself struggling was the accessories. The Thom Browne shoes barely pass, but the briefcase attempts to take this down a costumey path. Perhaps had the bag been smaller, I would’ve been on board. Carelle rings completed her look.

I love the direction she is taking with her fashion choices, she is totally selling it to me.

I’m down with the first look. I like what her hair has brought to her recent looks, it’s a nice break from the expected.

Wow. Those are bad looks. The dress is not very flattering. And that second outfit! Hideous. Why anyone would want to wear that…..I just don’t get it.

Her last outings have been consistently bad.

I actually really enjoy when celebs get more artful and daring with their fashion, but I find that when they do they start over-posing (a la Tessa in these looks) which kinds of ruins it. The only person who can wear avant-garde fashion and not look like a w***er seems to be Solange.

I don’t really like it but the dress is interesting and I look forward to seeing more from this designer. The suit is horrible.

The dress is nice, it has softness but modern. I wish she hadn’t obscured it with her braids. The suits rather unique but the suspended skirt feature doesn’t work as well here as on the dress Martha Hunt wore to the CDFA’s. The styling with it is pretty poor.

I kind of like the dress and I love the suit jacket, but with her styling options it all looks too try hard for me.

That is one ugly dress and one ridiculous clown suit.
