‘The Magic Faraway Tree’ New York Special Screening

Claire Foy and Andrew Garfield attended the New York special screening of The Magic Faraway Tree at Regal Union Square this week, offering two different takes on relaxed tailoring. While one look left me wanting a sharper finish, the other struck just the right balance between polish and personality.

Nice Idea

In theory, I like Claire Foy’s brown suit. The tonal palette suits her, and the sheer organza panels cascading from the shoulder, the waist and extending into a belt introduce an interesting textural contrast.

Unfortunately, the fit was the first thing I noticed. The jacket and trousers both looked a size too large, overwhelming her frame instead of creating the relaxed silhouette I suspect the designer intended. I wasn’t a fan of the rolled-up sleeves either.

With a better fit, I think this suit would have made a much stronger statement.

Summer Tailoring

Andrew Garfield fared much better in his Vivienne Westwood look.

The light camel suit had the easy elegance he has been serving up all summer, while the printed shirt added his usual charisma and injected the ’70s sensibility he so often returns to.

The proportions were spot on, the fit was clean, and the relaxed attitude suited both Andrew’s personal style and the atmosphere of the event.
