Front Row at the Max Mara Resort 2027 Show

Katie Holmes, Michelle Yeoh and Maude Apatow attended the Max Mara Resort 2027 show in Shanghai, and despite the city sitting firmly in the middle of summer, black emerged as the dominant colour of the evening.

I’m not sure if this was the label’s decision or if it happened organically, but the three women demonstrated just how differently monochrome dressing can be interpreted, from relaxed tailoring to fluid eveningwear and pared-back minimalism.

Relaxed After Dark

Katie Holmes continues to gravitate towards fluid evening dressing and relaxed tailoring, and this Max Mara look felt entirely in keeping with her current style. The satin gown layered beneath the oversized tuxedo-inspired jacket created an easy elegance that suits her particularly well.

I’m not sold on the sunglasses for this event. At an evening fashion show, they create a certain distance and remove some of the warmth and connection that usually make her appearances so appealing.

While it may not rank among her most memorable appearances this year, it feels completely authentic to her.

Dots In The Darkness

Michelle Yeoh offered the evening’s only real departure from solid black in a navy halter Max Mara gown scattered with oversized ivory dots. The scarf neckline and flowing silhouette brought softness, while the graphic print ensured the look stood apart against the darker palette surrounding her.

Among the three, hers was the lightest interpretation of the evening’s unofficial dress code. That said, I suspect some readers may be more distracted by the new wig than the dress itself. The shorter style gives Michelle a noticeably different appearance, and it inevitably becomes part of the conversation surrounding this look.

Modern Cheongsam Mood

Maude Apatow approached the evening with the restraint that has increasingly defined her red-carpet style. Her sleek black column gown, accented by a small bow detail at the neckline, relied entirely on clean lines and proportion.

There is also a subtle Cheongsam influence running through this design. The high neckline, streamlined silhouette and decorative closure nod to traditional Chinese dress without becoming literal, making it a thoughtful choice for a show staged in Shanghai. The reference feels respectful and understated.

The centre-parted hair, dark lip and structured mini bag reinforced the mood.
