Gwendoline Christie’s Theatrical Giles Deacon Met Gala 2026 Look

Gwendoline Christie attended her third Met Gala, but this marked her debut wearing Giles Deacon, something that feels long overdue given their established creative relationship.

If anyone was going to lean fully into the “Costume Art” theme, it was always going to be Christie and Deacon.

The red gown operates as performance as much as fashion. Built with a sculpted bodice and a flared, feather-trimmed tulle hem, the silhouette references theatrical costume traditions rather than conventional red carpet dressing. The richness of the colour, combined with the exaggerated proportions, places the look firmly within the language of stage and character.

That idea is pushed further through the accessories. The most striking detail is the handheld mask of Christie’s own face, created by artist Gillian Wearing. It introduces a layer of self-portraiture, turning the look into a study of identity and duplication, where the wearer becomes both subject and object.

Above it all sits a flamboyant feathered headpiece, created by Deacon in collaboration with milliner Stephen Jones, which amplifies the sense of performance. It reads less as an accessory and more as an extension of the character, heightening the overall theatricality.

Together, the elements align directly with the exhibition’s focus on costume as a form of art.
