2026 American Black Film Festival Honors Angela Bassett
The 2026 American Black Film Festival Honors celebrated Angela Bassett’s career, legacy, and cultural impact.
From her breakthrough in What’s Love Got to Do With It to defining turns in Waiting to Exhale, Malcolm X, Black Panther, and The Many Saints of Newark, she has sustained a standard of artistry and range that makes a lifetime tribute feel not only appropriate, but overdue.

Bernadine harris Energy
Keke Palmer presented the honour, and if you’re anything like me, you immediately clocked the reference. From the pixie cut to the sculpted black halter gown and crystal choker, the nod to Bernadine Harris from Waiting to Exhale was clear. What I appreciate most is that the homage never tips into imitation. It felt studied, respectful, and still entirely Keke.

Gold Standard Glamour
Angela Bassett’s Falguni Shane Peacock blazer may ring a bell, as Janelle Monáe wore it as a dress to the Costume Designers Guild Awards last week. Here, styled with the coordinating gown, the look reads richer. The cascading gold appliqués frame her silhouette and amplifying her presence. This is celebratory dressing with authority, which feels exactly right for the moment. David Webb jewels completed her look.

Classic Prada
Damson Idris was, of course, in Prada, returning to a more traditional silhouette. The cinnamon tailoring was impeccable, and the taupe pleated shirt introduced a subtle retro note. I am not usually convinced by brown and black together, but the contrast of the black lapels and bow tie keeps it crisp. Had the shirt been black, the look would have lost that depth.

Tailoring Done Properly
Dwayne Johnson opted for a bespoke Brioni shawl lapel tuxedo, and this is where my attention stayed. Not the open shirt, though I do not mind it, but the clean line of the jacket, the satin cummerbund, and the Chopard accessories, including the Alpine Eagle Summit timepiece, Happy Diamonds pendant and brooch from the Haute Joaillerie Collection. It is sleek, confident, and refreshingly unfussy.

Structure That Needed More Support
I would have been more convinced by Jennifer Hudson’s Jean Louis Sabaji Spring 2024 gown had the fabric carried more weight. The corseted bodice and sculpted draping promise drama, yet the material is way too flimsy to carry the design.
