Laverne Cox Wore Alexander McQueen To The 2025 WWD Honors

Laverne Cox attended the 2025 WWD Honors on Tuesday evening, and to say she delivered would be an understatement.

The actress wore an Alexander McQueen Spring 2013 look — from the late designer’s iconic Honeycomb collection — a masterclass in structure, craftsmanship, and dark romanticism. The dress, composed of black laser-cut leather layered over sheer tulle, showcased Lee McQueen’s obsession with texture and silhouette. The flared peplum waist and mermaid hem gave it that unmistakable edge of drama, balanced by sheer sleeves that softened the architecture.

What’s particularly special here is that Laverne made this look entirely her own. Instead of the original runway’s corseted amber tortoiseshell belt, she opted for a subtler metallic belt. Yet, she stayed true to the McQueen spirit by committing to the vision with the hat, choker, and cuffs. Few stars are willing to go this far, but for Laverne, fashion isn’t cosplay — it’s her lifestyle.

Given her history with McQueen and her love for collecting archival pieces, I wouldn’t be surprised if this look came directly from her personal closet. There’s an authenticity to how she wears McQueen: she honours the vision while injecting her own sense of performance and personality.

Where others might have softened the look for approachability, Laverne doubled down on the theatre. That’s what makes this so satisfying — she understands that McQueen was never about playing it safe. She totally nailed it.
