‘The Phoenician Scheme’ Cannes Film Festival Premiere Red Carpet Roundup

Here’s a look at who thrilled and who… tried from the Cannes Film Festival premiere of The Phoenician Scheme which took place on Sunday.

Serving chocolate dreams

Daisy Edgar-Jones wore a custom brown Gucci strapless gown embroidered with sequins and paillettes. While some might say it leans a little too autumnal for a summer festival, I say this: if this is what autumn looks like, I’m ready to jump in a pile of leaves. The warm chocolate hue is divine on her. Boucheron jewels completed her look.

Lime, fringe, and attitude—only she could pull this off

Isabelle Huppert once again proved she’s in a league of her own, wearing a Balenciaga acid green horsehair fringed gown. Layered over the house’s Pantashoes for a full-on tonal explosion, she gave us something that was part avant-garde and part intergalactic. The pièce de résistance? De Beers jewels, including a necklace that could rival a comet’s tail.

Mini dress, major edge

Charlotte Gainsbourg did what Charlotte Gainsbourg does best: wore Saint Laurent with her signature nonchalance. Her green mini from the Fall 2025 collection was peak cool-girl energy, accessorised with the label’s Pyramid bronze necklace and Opyum sandals. It’s that effortless Parisian edge that’s Charlotte has made her trademark. Never change, Charlotte.

throwback velvet

Carla Bruni’s Roberto Cavalli one-sleeve asymmetric red devoré velvet gown felt dated, and I’m blaming that single sleeve. The Cavalli sandals and signature crystal tiger clutch weren’t enough to save it.

Retro JPG, but make it 2025

Joan Smalls stepped out in a Jean Paul Gaultier Fall 1998 Haute Couture gown, proving that you can’t put an expiration date on a great Couture look. The black gown featured a delicate white crochet trim mimicking a peek-a-boo bra moment—unexpected and utterly fabulous. Pasquale Bruni statement jewellery sealed the deal. Compared to Carla, this was the kind of retro that still feels fresh.

A whisper of couture perfection

Chinese actress Tang Yan floated down the carpet in a diaphanous Fendi Archive dress from the Fall 2019 Couture collection. Styled with a shimmering Fendi silver Mini Baguette, the gown’s delicate detailing and ethereal quality made it one of the night’s quiet standouts. Proof that subtlety can still slay.

When couture swallows you whole

Araya A.Hargate is usually a Cannes MVP, but this Tamara Ralph Spring 2025 Couture look was not it. She was completely overwhelmed by fabric in a way that felt more “cocooned by chaos” than high fashion. The creases were distracting, the silhouette unflattering, and the Rene Caovilla Cleo sandals looked like an afterthought. It pains me to say this, but this might be her worst Cannes look ever.
