Thom Browne @ 2023 Met Gala

Jenna Ortega, Olivia Rodrigo, Alexander Skarsgard, Bella Ramsey, Teyana Taylor, Janelle Monae, Daniel Ricciardo, Pusha T, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Sora Choi, Trevor Noah and Baz Luhrmann were all dressed by Thom Browne for the 2023 Met Gala on Monday (May 1).

If there was one label that was guaranteed to nail the theme, it was Thom Browne, and he absolutely delivered.

You could say he understood the assignment, or that his aesthetic gave him a head start over everyone else.

Each guest was a true individual, paying homage to a creative pioneer.

Jenna Ortega was easily one of the best on the night wearing a corseted Thom Browne dress and cropped jacket with deconstructed tailoring that was not only perfect for the Met Gala, but in tune with her Wednesday character.

I have said that the Thom Browne looks were feeling a bit samey recently, but when a designer gives us this level of creativity, this is when I’m all in.

Olivia Rodrigo’s look may not have had the same energy, but Thom Browne’s M.O. was to ensure each guest wore a look that fit their persona, which is why this black and white silk and tweed fringed dress was the perfect choice for Olivia.

The homage to Karl was seen in the variety of camellias made from tweeds, leathers and silks- faille.

You might be disappointed by Alexander Skarsgård’s Thom Browne look, but the actor has never given us anything but classic suits.

Yes, it would’ve been awesome for him to have stepped out of his comfort-zone for one night only, but it wasn’t to be.

Teyana Taylor was a vision in embroidered tweed, wearing a classic Thom Browne tailored backless double-breasted jacket teamed with a cheeky matching drop waist skirt with train.

The cut, the precision and the styling made this easily one of the best looks of the night.

Janelle Monáe was the most expected of all the looks on this red carpet, and I’m sure many of you feel the same.

The singer started off with a Thom Browne exaggerated black and white funmix tweed tuxedo suit, then the layer was removed to reveal a circular black tulle pannier dress.

For me, the reveal was a little unnecessary, as it brought nothing to the occasion. The first look was dramatic enough, the second felt a bit (dare I say) desperate.

Australian F1 driver Daniel Ricciardo also opted for a classic Thom Browne suit which presented in the usual turned up trousers, shorter sleeve flair.

The Thom Browne spectator black heel boots gave this look an edge over Alexander Skarsgård’s more timeless look.

Pusha T leaned into juxtaposition wearing a Thom Browne funmix black and white pattern play suit. 

Visually, this was one of the standout suits on the night, and for once I’m going to applaud tap dancing shoes on the red carpet.

Basketball player Shai Gilgeous-Alexander opted to layer up in Thom Browne, showcasing his adventurous sense of style.

South Korean model Sora Choi made a dramatic entrance wearing a deconstructed Thom Browne coat dress that was not only covered in camellias, but also featured a unique draped padded overlay.

A Cartier tie pin completed her look.

Bella Ramsey’s served up a pinstripe and pearls Thom Browne look which was very much on brand for the young star, who loves a tailored look.

Pasquale Bruni jewels completed her look.

I’m not sure what I’m most on board with when it comes to Trevor Noah’s look.

The Thom Browne suit, or his Ghana braids.

I love is how his velvet tuxedo sport coat features tonal camellia embroidery.

Baz Luhrmann cosied up to Nicole Kidman wearing a classic Thom Browne suit with the collage jacket being the highlight, along with this Thom Browne spectator black heel boots.

It’s going to be a hard task picking a favourite from this set.
