Miley Cyrus: Back to Back Black

Miley Cyrus in Francesco Scognamiglio at the MusiCares Person of the Year Gala and Thierry Mugler at the Grammys

Miley Cyrus has undoubtedly made some sartorial statements in her time. There was even a point when she rivaled the Goliaths of the fabulously out-there fashion movement, following in the footsteps of Lady Gaga (c. 2014) and Katy Perry (c. 2010).

However, in recent months, we’ve seen Miley make a massive shift towards minimalism. Not only has she hung up most of her once-infamous ensembles, but also much of the fluorescent colour scheme that previously dominated her style.

In its stead? An almost all-black wardrobe.

Let’s explore some of her latest monochrome garb from the month of February alone.

At the MusiCares Person of the Year Gala, Miley sported a black Maison Francesco Scognamiglio minidress that showed a little leg and a lot of support for sustainable fashion with the Public Desire vegan leather heels she wore to accessorize the outfit.

A few days later at the Grammys, she donned a Mugler pantsuit that would act as a continuation of the brand’s lucky streak that night with Cardi B also wearing two of the label’s vintage pieces. With the likes of Lady Gaga and Blake Lively taking a stereotypically male wardrobe staple and making it their own, it was only natural that Miley followed suit.

Later in the month, Miley would take the plunge in a black, sequined Saint Laurent gown while attending the Vanity Fair Oscar party. She couldn’t very well leave her neckline naked, so she dressed it in a Bulgari Serpenti necklace, as one does.

Finally, Miley closed out February in support of the Women’s Cancer Research Fund in a black Tom Ford pantsuit with baby pink lapel accents to celebrate the occasion.

Considering that she has seen both sides of the style spectrum ranging from some rather radical looks on one end to her more muted recent attire, Miley nonetheless stands out from the crowd.

Whether it’s a daring, completely see-through ensemble or a tasteful, sheer-paneled John Paul Gaultier dress, she complements every outfit with an accessory that is uniquely hers: that unparalleled Miley personality.

We’re wondering. Will this all black all of the time continue? Or will she dip her toe in colour, like her one red Valentino moment.
