Zoe Saldana In Prabal Gurung – 2014 Golden Globe Awards

Zoe Saldana In Prabal Gurung - 2014 Golden Globe Awards

Every gaze must have been directed Zoe Saldana’s way, as she posed on the red carpet at the 2014 Golden Globe Awards, held at The Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California on Sunday (January 12).

The actress, who is never one to shy away from the edgier side of fashion, debuted a ballet-pink and black frock from Prabal Gurung’s Spring 2014 collection.

The elegantly slim-line, pencil-skirt silhouette was given a provocative, futuristic dash of flair, given all that bold bric-a-brac that laced nearly every inch of the dress.

Punched up with silver flashing at the molded bodice and glittery flowery-like embellishment, it also featured an asymmetrical, sheer lace panel that shot through the bottom half and also showed up again at the slit of the back.

It was a sexy-sassy-quirky moment if there ever was one.

Matching blushing-nude heels and a pink Bottega Veneta clutch corresponded with the dress, while dainty Lorraine Schwarz diamond earrings, a slicked-back bun and red lip (no space-age lavender lipstick here) put a classic tinge on this complicated number.

Zoe has the distinct advantage of looking every bit as good as the runway model in this hyper-designed look. The complexity is what made this dress really tick—or for some, it may be its ultimate downfall. But the more I looked at it, the more I liked it, much to my own surprise.

You may remember that Fashion Critic had this dress picked out for Zoe Saldana on her wish list.

Nope, sorry..quirky is just not good enough tonight!

  2. Christine January 13, 2014 at 02:34 #

I like the top half but this dress is very tricky and interesting. Not really a fan.

  3. jessicamarantelli January 13, 2014 at 02:34 #

Amazing…each little thing about this dress I dont really like but add it all together and for some reason I am really liking this.

    • jessicamarantelli January 13, 2014 at 02:36 #

…though maybe not really Globes material.

  4. Michaela January 13, 2014 at 02:35 #

Yikes. This is miss for me.

    • anonymous as always January 15, 2014 at 21:59 #

      For me too.

  5. Alex January 13, 2014 at 02:37 #

This is among my worst dressed of the night. Awful.

  6. Anne Gallagher January 13, 2014 at 02:37 #

It took me a minute to take this dress all in visually. There is so much to ingest. It is the kind of dress which could be a disaster, but somehow, it works. I love the bold style.

  7. Mol January 13, 2014 at 02:37 #

A case of the perfect lady for a difficult dress – she totally pulls it off I think.

    • Alina January 13, 2014 at 04:39 #

      +1!

Way too much going on with this dress and I also think that it looks a bit cheap. Kudos to her for trying something different, but I really don’t like this.

  9. Amber January 13, 2014 at 02:38 #

Uf, a hot mess is what that is.

    • snowlion January 13, 2014 at 04:20 #

      Indeed.

  10. Nat39 January 13, 2014 at 02:38 #

The dress is so bad and overwrought, even Zoe can’t save it for me.

  11. CreoleLady January 13, 2014 at 02:39 #

I clicked through to see more pictures of this (dislike the pigeon-toed stance of the chosen pic). She is working it. Profile, rear and her money over-the-shoulder shots are gorgeous. This dress is rapidly growing on me as well.

  12. Lindy January 13, 2014 at 02:42 #

I think it’s fabulous but maybe not quite right for this event.

  13. moja31 January 13, 2014 at 02:47 #

there’s no way around it, this is tragic

    • Nat39 January 13, 2014 at 02:53 #

      Tragic is the right word.

  14. Nat January 13, 2014 at 02:52 #

    Big no.

  15. AG January 13, 2014 at 02:58 #

I surprisingly don’t hate this. I think this is kind of cool. If anyone can make it work it’s Zoe. The back isn’t great though and it’s certainly not appropriate for the Globes.

  16. Pedro January 13, 2014 at 03:18 #

    She looks terrible, really terrible

  17. chicshrieks January 13, 2014 at 03:23 #

I think it would’ve worked better if she had lost the clutch.

  18. Prudence January 13, 2014 at 03:24 #

I adore that she did not go the traditional gown way. this dress in interesting enough to deserve such a major award show. I really like it! one of the best of the night

  19. Serenity January 13, 2014 at 04:09 #

I would have definitely liked this at, say, the MTV Movie Awards. But just not at the GGs. It sticks out like a sore thumb. Also, hearing her talk on E! really turned me off. She seems to think she is it.

@Fashioncritic you called this in your “NYFW Spring 2014 Red Carpet Wish List Part II”! You don’t seem as excited about getting your wish as I would’ve thought! But it is a tricky look to be sure.

  21. Aline January 13, 2014 at 05:27 #

This is dreadful. It’s hard to belive the same designer who made this dress made the beautiful one Cate wore the other night.

  22. Meryl January 13, 2014 at 05:41 #

Not a fan. It’s definitely an interesting dress, I’ll give her that. I think the red carpet as a backdrop is what makes it look so off. It looks much better on the runway.

  23. yesferdinand January 13, 2014 at 06:08 #

FC, you mistaken the title, it’s Golden Globes.

  24. Fiona - Perth January 13, 2014 at 08:20 #

I like this on her – she reminded me that she is a trained ballerina when she wore this and she can pull off this difficult look when most could not. Apparently Prabal Gurung called her and said he had designed this dress with her in mind and so she pretty much felt obliged to wear it regardless.

  25. msd January 13, 2014 at 09:05 #

This is a Project Runway reject dress.

  26. Iva January 13, 2014 at 09:59 #

Call me crazy but I like this.
Yes – it’s not classic RC dress but that’s the beauty of it.
    Much better than Sandra Bullock.

  27. Sanya January 13, 2014 at 10:52 #

I expected more from her. This is not good enough for Golden Globe. The dress looks like a sleeping night dress.

  28. Cuteboy January 13, 2014 at 12:14 #

I love this! I have no idea why, but one of the best dressed of the night in my opinion!

    • Iva January 13, 2014 at 14:27 #

  29. Jess2 January 13, 2014 at 13:51 #

Way to go FC!! Very nicely played.
I also like this more the more I look at it but I’m not sure it is the right choice for the event. Then again, Zoe is never one to conform.

  30. dee January 13, 2014 at 14:06 #

I love this dress on her but I just wish she wore sandals not pumps.

  31. kane January 13, 2014 at 17:19 #

    Also Team No.

  32. Joy January 13, 2014 at 18:01 #

This is very Zoe, but that doesn’t make it a good thing. This dress might have worked for another event, but definitely not for the Golden Globes. One of the worst of the night for me.

  33. Taylor January 13, 2014 at 21:33 #

    A definite win for Zoe.

  34. Sarah January 13, 2014 at 21:47 #

    Great dress, wrong event.

  35. H January 13, 2014 at 23:00 #

    Yes, yes, yes, yes!

  36. Dhppy January 14, 2014 at 06:03 #

This reminds me of Project Runway where designers have to make a new dress out of remnants of old dresses. Way too much going on.
