Gwyneth Paltrow In Tom Ford – 2012 Oscars

I may change my mind in the morning, but Gwyneth Paltrow was my best dressed on the red carpet tonight at the 2012 Oscars, held in Hollywood this evening.

She opted to wear a Tom Ford white dress with a uber chic cape which was recently presented at part of this ‘top secret’ Fall 2012 collection.

The designer has been waiting for a major Oscar moment since he launched his womenswear collection, and here we finally have it.

My first reaction to this was, “thank god it’s not another gold shimmering Calvin Klein bland column dress”, because lord knows she’s done that look to death.

A chic ponytail, barely-there makeup and silver jewels completed her look.

Also my best dressed of the night! Simply chic! Love it!

    • SilentVisitor February 27, 2012 at 05:12 #

Michelle Williams and Gwyneth Paltrow are my best dresses of the night

  2. gurlygurl February 27, 2012 at 04:54 #

I really love this look. It is so elegant and unexpected. The hair looks amazing front on, from the side view it’s just a pony but then again she has done the short hair before and it obviously works. It’s really just a great look altogether. Lovely accesories, really can’t fault it.

  3. Ella February 27, 2012 at 04:56 #

My only problem with this outfit was that from behind, her hair looked pulled up with a rubber band =(

    Love the dress, though <3

    • noo February 27, 2012 at 10:44 #

hated the hair, the dress could have taken any styling and this is what she went with :S

    • dee February 27, 2012 at 13:52 #

I agree, wish the hair had been better but she looks amazing nonetheless.

  4. Christine February 27, 2012 at 04:57 #

Dramatic and perfect for the Oscars. One of the Best dressed 😀

  5. pepe February 27, 2012 at 04:58 #

that dress is so Armani Prive

  6. frommdq February 27, 2012 at 05:00 #

best drees of the night for me too! She took a big risk with the cape but she is working it.

  7. Kim February 27, 2012 at 05:00 #

    Definitely best dressed! SO CHIC!

  8. Leti February 27, 2012 at 05:04 #

Perfection, with and without the cape!

  9. Vidhya February 27, 2012 at 05:07 #

I love the cape.. so dramatic.. yet so chic and clean

  10. Niki February 27, 2012 at 05:12 #

    Absolutely stunning! I love it.

  11. mm February 27, 2012 at 05:12 #

I agree she was the best dressed. She looks expensive

  12. Sabina February 27, 2012 at 05:18 #

My best dressed of the night, so simple and elegant! I prefer it with the cape, without it it’s not as dramatic. I love the low loose pony but I am missing some simple diamond studs.

  13. Pam February 27, 2012 at 05:18 #

I’m sorry, but that cape is unforgivable.

  14. b February 27, 2012 at 05:20 #

No one does minimalism like Gywneth.

I love this look so much. And I can bet on my house this is going to be a look that goes down in Oscar carpet history *droooools*

  15. Snowlion February 27, 2012 at 05:20 #

Perfect, best dressed without a doubt.

  16. pipsqueak February 27, 2012 at 05:22 #

Michelle is my first choice and Gwyneth is a close second. This is a truly stunning and chic look. Tom Ford suits her. Not just the simplicity, the quiet sexiness, but that Ford designs for a woman with experience and sophistication. I also loved the banter between Gwyneth and Robert Downey Jr. on stage. I forgot how great an actress she is and how funny she can be.

  17. asherlev1 February 27, 2012 at 05:25 #

She looked AMAZING. Before I saw her, I had a handful of sequined numbers I liked, but her minimalistic chicness outshined them all.

  18. Ally February 27, 2012 at 05:29 #

She looks beautiful, channeling an inner Kate Blanchett!

  19. NooG February 27, 2012 at 05:30 #

Easily my favorite of the night. <3!

  20. Tahlia February 27, 2012 at 05:35 #

Perfection. My favourite along with Emma Stone and Penelope Cruz. I can forgive the hair being in a ponytail as it looks fantastic from the front.

  21. From Russia With Love February 27, 2012 at 05:41 #

That is one of the more interesting looks of the night. Pfff… And I’m talking about simple white dress. Not a single memorable outfit this year :/ i’m dissappointed. The moment I thought Kelly Osbourne and Juliana Rancic were one of the best I knew that something is wrong.

  22. Nancy February 27, 2012 at 05:45 #

Gweneth is so tall and elegant, I would have loved to have seen in something more dramatic, especially for the occasion. The Tom Ford dress looked like an old Calvin Klein, it was too simplistic to wear for a night to shine.

  23. Aline February 27, 2012 at 05:49 #

    It’s an okay gown and a ponytail… I don’t like it.

  24. JJ February 27, 2012 at 06:16 #

  25. SS February 27, 2012 at 06:17 #

This look is definitely in my top three, along with Emma Stone and Jessica Chastain (Sherri Shepherd, who won’t get much coverage, gets honorable mention from me). She looks elegant and regal, but not in an expected or safe way. <3 it.

  26. SkirtTheIssue February 27, 2012 at 06:18 #

I love it- she took a risk and it worked! The saviour of this red carpet! (and I am not usually a Gwenny fan…)

  27. Rosalie February 27, 2012 at 06:24 #

Loved your coverage! You had all my favourites, well except li bingbing but I did think this year was a bit lackluster though. Kinda expected more :(

  28. Louise February 27, 2012 at 06:46 #

    Amazing… Absolutly beautiful

  29. goldfish February 27, 2012 at 07:05 #

love this! so old hollywood sophistication.. bdotw no doubt!!

  30. Tiger Nueng February 27, 2012 at 07:11 #

This look so amazing,I really love this!

  31. GirlOne February 27, 2012 at 07:18 #

It’s very Old Hollywood.Apart from the hair – but then she never does anything exciting with her hair.

  32. A February 27, 2012 at 07:22 #

Oh my god! She’s gorgeous! I’m speechless!!!

  33. dressaddict February 27, 2012 at 07:24 #

I don’t know why, but the cape is kind of annoying. The dress without it looks much better, IMO.
Glenn and Michelle were my favourites.
I also liked Livia Giuggioli and (don’t know who that is, got to Gooogle it :) ) Louise Roe.

  34. A. February 27, 2012 at 07:52 #

Milla Jovovich is no longer the best dressed celebrity of the night, Gwyneth is. Love everything about this look, the cape, the color, the hair, makeup, accessories. It’s a very understated look. but a sure shot winner. She’s my BDOTW!

  35. Ramsay February 27, 2012 at 08:02 #

No doubt about that all – the moment she stepped on thebred carpet I knew we had our winner – just lovely and different – will be remembered as one of oscar’s best ever in fashion

  36. Karen February 27, 2012 at 08:13 #

She’s my best-dressed too! Now she’ll have a truly iconic Oscars look and thank god it’s not the pink Ralph Lauren. 😉

    • dag February 27, 2012 at 10:06 #

Yeah, thought the same about pink disaster. This is outstanding!

  37. Andreea February 27, 2012 at 08:14 #

    Simply perfect

  38. Emi February 27, 2012 at 08:24 #

It’s hard to choose a favorite look for me, because there were so many beautiful gowns on the red carpet, but when I saw this I thought that it was incredibly beautiful and elegant.

  39. Sarah February 27, 2012 at 08:32 #

Without a doubt, best dressed of the night.

  40. Zmia February 27, 2012 at 08:33 #

What about that cape?! it would be so much better without it!

  41. D February 27, 2012 at 09:00 #

love this :) so simple so beautiful. wondering would adding on earings be any good?

  42. kiwi February 27, 2012 at 09:10 #

Beautiful and elegant but not my best dressed

  43. Rahel February 27, 2012 at 09:24 #

    Very chic.

  44. chiara February 27, 2012 at 10:25 #

    Absolutely the BEST DRESSED!
    Love the cape!!

  45. roxana February 27, 2012 at 10:30 #

the dress is so amazind, and the hair from the front looks great, but in the back: bleah!

  46. Kyriaki-Cyprus February 27, 2012 at 10:31 #

Yep, Gwyneth is among my favourites from last night. The dress suited her a lot!

  47. eimearoconnor February 27, 2012 at 10:43 #

I love it, modern structural, almost looks like a sculpture. It looks as though the cape is attached to the dress and its one piece..!

  48. noo February 27, 2012 at 10:46 #

i simply don’t like this look! it is minimalist but still looks over thought with the cape and the shoulder pads, and her hair isn’t helping!

    • J February 27, 2012 at 13:46 #

+1 Totally agree. The cape detracts from the dress.

  49. Carmen February 27, 2012 at 10:51 #

I am agree with you, best dressed of the night. Too bad she didn’t wear the cape on the stage when she was presenting an award.

  50. Sofia February 27, 2012 at 13:39 #

She looked AMAZING! So different and so elegant. She definitely is a fashion trendsetter.
p.s I disagree with her hair cause it looked good only in the front.
    But still AMAZING!

  51. Carolina Roq February 27, 2012 at 13:39 #

One of the best of the night. I preferred with the cape.

  52. J February 27, 2012 at 13:46 #

I like the dress itself, but the cape is weird and ruins it.

  53. SandTony February 27, 2012 at 14:11 #

She looked absolutely perfect! Her face, make up, hair is pure elegance, she looked really beautiful. Probably the best after Jessica Chastain

  54. Nat February 27, 2012 at 14:19 #

I have to admit that when she was younger I didn’t always get all the fuss about her and her style. But this look is just perfect: it represents everything that she’s always been praised for (simple, chic, classy, elegant almost in timeless way, “Gracekelly-esque”) and that I previously struggled to see in her.

She and Michelle Williams were my best dressed of the night!

  55. Annpod February 27, 2012 at 14:26 #

Hello fc, I miss the times you do a separate post on your awards – like best dressed, worst dressed, etc… I love those posts!

  56. Camille February 27, 2012 at 16:13 #

One of the best dressed for sure! Even without the cape, which is just so cool BTW, she looked amazing. Would have loved a little more earring action, nothing long or swingy, but just a touch of sparkle and I’m sold!

  57. Chris February 27, 2012 at 18:06 #

I can’t decide if she should be yelling “to the Batcave!” or running from a wolf looking for grandma’s baked goods, but the cape is throwing me off.

  58. EmmaWoodhouse February 27, 2012 at 18:08 #

Penelope Cruz channeled Grace Kelly (and did fabulously–she was my favorite) but Gwyneth seems inspired by Jackie O! This look is gorgeous–minimalist, chic, and stand-out. She was the Cate Blanchett of this year’s Oscars.

  59. andrea February 27, 2012 at 20:03 #

This will be impossible to top, tres chic!!!!

  60. jane February 27, 2012 at 20:16 #

Sleek, clean lines, well tailored, unexpected color, unexpected modern take on the cape, beautiful accessories, and great makeup. She looks damn stylish and sophisticated. I am impressed and I usually can’t stand her but I will acknowledge how great she looks here. A small, single stud diamond necklace would have been a nice touch but it looks great without it too.

  61. gabis February 28, 2012 at 01:30 #

She looks like a goddess! Love, love, love it!

  62. elaine2 February 28, 2012 at 01:55 #

I saw her on the red carpet and my first reaction was this: These women need to move away from the form-fitting slinky dresses. Even Gwyneth has a stomach, and from the side this dress was not doing her any favors.

Personally, I think some of the other dresses with a structured fabric were more beautiful – plus the actresses could wear them without any worry. It’s time to take red carpet fashion to a new direction, IMO.

  63. Rebecca February 28, 2012 at 03:32 #

They hair and makeup could be different, but the dress is very chic. She has the straight up and down body for this gown.

  64. B February 28, 2012 at 03:47 #

I don’t get it. Does the cape comes off? Is the cape attached to the whole dress?

  65. Mildred Marigny February 28, 2012 at 04:23 #

Tom Ford is RE-MARK-ABLE! His new design for women is FAB-U-LOUS. I’ve always admired the way he dresses men, now he will be sort after by those who love being Bold as well as Beatiful in fashion!!

  66. Alina February 28, 2012 at 14:09 #

The ensemble is stunning, but I really dislike her hairstyle.

  67. amandaines February 28, 2012 at 22:13 #

She looked absolutely divine and the most elegant of all the other stars.

  68. Amy February 29, 2012 at 00:04 #

Tom must send her flowers. She rocked that look. Just few days back Ford was complaining how noone would dare to wear one of his creations because it was all about fishtails, strapless pretty gowns and that the stars were too afraid of all those worst dressed lists. Well Tom, Gwyneth did it!!
and the cape adds the perfect dramatic touch

  69. Shaina February 29, 2012 at 00:23 #

She looks fabulous! This is a gown I will remember for years to come. Tom Ford should be proud. I already know this will be on my BDOTY list.

  70. lin February 29, 2012 at 06:03 #

Really liked the dress and cape together, but the dress on its own, not so much.

  71. Parvati February 29, 2012 at 23:52 #

This is such a beautiful dress!
