Cate Blanchett’s Uniqlo Suit Recalls Clare Waight Keller’s Givenchy Era
The 37th Praemium Imperiale Award ceremony took place last week at Meiji Kinenkan in Tokyo, where Cate Blanchett was honoured as the Theatre/Film laureate, receiving her award from Princess Hitachi.

For an occasion of this significance, Cate opted for a bespoke black suit designed by Clare Waight Keller for Uniqlo, and I have to say, if you had told me this was an archival Givenchy Haute Couture design from Waight Keller’s tenure, I would have believed you.
Cate has never been one to settle for conventional tailoring, and this look was another example of why I love her approach to suiting.

Crafted from Japanese wool and fine silk, the jacket featured asymmetric lapels, with an oversized, origami-inspired fold revealing a contrasting white lining. That flash of white made all the difference, breaking up the black tailoring while drawing attention to the jacket’s most interesting feature.
A wide black leather belt defined the waist, a classic Waight Keller touch, while the wide-leg trousers complemented the jacket’s sharp silhouette.

What I love most about this look is that it reminds me of everything I miss about Clare Waight Keller’s time at Givenchy. The tailoring, the unexpected details and her ability to make a black suit feel so special.

Seeing Cate and Clare reunite for this occasion reminded me how much I enjoyed their previous collaborations. And the fact that this is Uniqlo makes it all the more interesting.
