Shakira Takes Gaurav Gupta’s Sculptural Signature to Another Level

Shakira continued her Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour with the Madrid European residency, and one of her new stage looks saw her reunite with Gaurav Gupta for a custom Couture creation designed exclusively for the shows.

The look features the designer’s Lunar Wolf Breastplate, paired with a handwoven silk brocade skirt crafted in Banaras, India. The contrast between the rigid metallic bodice and the fluidity of the skirt makes this such a breathtaking stage moment.

Gaurav Gupta has spent years developing his signature wave-like forms, with sculpted gowns that appear to ripple and curl around the body. Here, the pleated brocade builds into sweeping loops and exaggerated curves around Shakira’s legs, while the moulded gold breastplate takes that familiar design language somewhere new.

For me, adding the breastplate takes the look to another level. It gives all that volume below a striking focal point and makes the entire silhouette feel even more commanding on stage.

Shakira’s wardrobe has become just as important to the visual impact of her performances, something we also saw during her FIFA World Cup appearances earlier this year. This was clearly a look for a ballad rather than one of her up-tempo numbers, allowing the sculptural skirt to command the stage without having to contend with high-energy choreography.

This is where Gaurav Gupta excels. His signature is immediately recognisable, but this combination of metalwork and handwoven brocade shows there are still new ways to interpret those familiar sculptural forms.
