Kim Kardashian’s Law Roach Debut Is Surprisingly Familiar
Kim Kardashian attended the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art Opening Night in Los Angeles on Saturday, and depending on which side of the fashion-or-gossip fence you sit, there were two debuts to discuss. On the fashion side, this marked her first red carpet appearance styled by Law Roach. On the gossip side, she made her red carpet debut with her Saint Laurent-clad beau Lewis Hamilton. If you’re like me, you’re sitting somewhere in the middle.
The Law-Kardashian partnership began with the reality star wearing a vintage Yves Saint Laurent by Tom Ford Fall 2004 cheongsam-inspired column gown. The black sequinned design features intricate floral and landscape motifs, a high collar and keyhole neckline, while its body-skimming silhouette is firmly within Kim’s established wheelhouse.
If you had heard that Law Roach was styling Kim before seeing the pictures, you would have expected something different, right?
Because why hire the self-proclaimed Image Architect only to give us something we’ve seen from Kim many times before? Another fitted dress showcasing her curves, with a keyhole neckline drawing attention to her cleavage. I get it. Her body is her brand. But for the debut of this partnership, I was expecting an evolution, not more of the same.
And this isn’t the first celebrity outing for the dress. CelebFashionTwin noted that it was previously worn in 2004 by Céline Dion to the World Music Awards in Las Vegas and Gong Li to the opening ceremony of the Cannes Film Festival.
Considering Law’s knowledge of fashion history, I wonder whether he knew this particular archive piece already had two high-profile red carpet outings. His approach has so often been about securing the fashion moment first – including famously having a dress flown by private jet from a Paris runway to London within hours – which makes this choice all the more interesting.
Perhaps the real surprise of the Law-Kardashian partnership is that, for its first outing, the clothes weren’t surprising at all.
