Rooney Mara Returns to Black for the ‘Bucking Fastard’ Premiere

Following the photocall earlier in the day, Rooney Mara returned for the Venice Film Festival premiere of Bucking Fastard, where, as predicted, the actress wore black.

Only half of my prediction came true, however, as I also expected her to wear Givenchy. Instead, Rooney wore a Louis Vuitton black satin slip dress featuring a fitted, panelled bodice before erupting into a voluminous, densely ruched hem.

I love how Nicolas Ghesquière took the humble black slip dress and transformed the lower half into this extraordinary mass of gathered fabric. The contrast is what makes the dress: simple and familiar through the body, then completely unexpected from the knees down.

We all know how minimalist Rooney is, and I’m sure she would have been perfectly happy with the slip dress before the dramatic hem entered the equation. She will almost always take the most understated route, so I love that she gave us something to marvel at here while still wearing a dress that feels unmistakably Rooney.

If this is what we can expect from her black looks going forward, I’m locked in.

Her slicked-back hair and neutral makeup continued the pared-back approach, with a selection of silver jewels and black Aquazzura Purist pumps completing her look.
