The Web She Weaves: Zendaya’s Ten-Year Spider-Man Style Evolution
Four films. Ten years. One stylist. Somewhere between a Comic-Con panel in 2016 and the London premiere this summer, Zendaya and Law Roach turned a press tour into a fashion story of its own – and the moment it happened is more precise than you might think.
Law has dressed Zendaya since 2011, back when she was a Disney Channel teenager and some of fashion’s biggest houses wouldn’t dress her. The stylist has never forgotten those early rejections, famously naming Saint Laurent, Chanel, Gucci, Valentino and Dior as the “Big Five” that turned them down. His position was simple: a “no” then meant a “no” forever. Valentino eventually became the exception when Zendaya signed a contract with the house, but Dior, Chanel, Saint Laurent and Gucci have remained absent from her red carpet and press tour wardrobe.
By the time Spider-Man: Homecoming rolled around in 2017, the partnership was six years deep but still finding its footing on the global stage. What follows is the four-film arc, and the exact point where “dressing for the premiere” became “dressing for the film’s central story.”

The Homecoming tour has no thesis, and it doesn’t need one. This is Zendaya and Roach auditioning ideas in real time, with a different house at nearly every stop: Kenzo at Comic-Con, a cobalt Simkhai slip dress in Madrid, a bumblebee-striped Molly Goddard moment in London and that unapologetically hot-pink Ralph & Russo gown at the Hollywood premiere.

None of it is thinking about the film. All of it is thinking about her. That’s the whole appeal of this era: a 20-year-old star with an increasingly fearless stylist, just making great fashion happen because they could. No concept required.

Two years later, the tour starts building a wardrobe rather than just a highlight reel. The standouts are the Alexandre Vauthier houndstooth-and-bow suit at the London photocall and the Carolina Herrera moment en route to The Late Show with Stephen Colbert: a strapless orange mini with a matching turban and bow earrings that was so perfect it landed on my Best Dressed of the Year list.

Neither is doing anything conceptual. They’re just some of the best pure fashion moments of the entire franchise.

Which makes the Hollywood world premiere stand out. Zendaya wore an Armani Privé gown with a red sequined bodice flowing into a black sequined skirt. Far From Home introduces Peter Parker’s new red-and-black suit, and Zendaya arriving at the premiere in the same colour story feels like the first real sign of what was coming.
You could appreciate the gown without ever making the connection. That would not be the case for much longer.

This is where the occasional reference becomes the strategy.
The build-up alone tells the story: the McQueen blazer at the London photocall, embroidered with crystal webbing and paired with spiderweb-patterned tights and Jacob & Co. spider earrings, was widely read in real time as a nod to Venom – a dark, inverted echo of Spider-Man’s own colour story.

That would have been enough to make the point. Instead, Law Roach saved the real statement for the premiere itself: a custom Valentino Haute Couture gown featuring nude illusion netting covered in black spiderweb embroidery, complete with a matching mask. Not a suggestion of a web. An actual web, worn to the biggest event of the tour.
The timeline matters here. Roach wouldn’t publicly put a name to this approach – “method dressing,” a term he has since used to describe the Dune and Challengers tours – until 2024. But the technique itself was already fully formed three years earlier.
No Way Home wasn’t a stepping stone towards method dressing. It was the moment method dressing arrived for the pair, before they had publicly given it a name.

If No Way Home is where method dressing arrived for Zendaya, Brand New Day is where Zendaya and Law Roach took it across an entire tour, moving between web-inspired details, spiders and archive pulls.

The archival John Galliano Spring 1997 Circus gown remains the standout for me. Law later called it the look from the tour he was proudest of, and I can understand why. As with the archival Armani look in Rome, the reference was already sitting in fashion history; Law just knew where to find it.

Then there was the vintage Spider-Man T-shirt Law found on eBay for $34.99. Among the Couture, custom designs and archive pulls, it was a reminder that a great reference doesn’t depend on the price tag.

By the LA premiere, Zendaya’s Ashi Studio Couture gown moved beyond the web to the spider itself, before a Keren Wolf jewelled spider at the back of her Tamara Ralph Couture gown closed the tour in London.
One spiderweb gown established the idea in 2021. Five years later, Zendaya and Law had an entire vocabulary to work with.

It’s tempting to describe this as a slow, steady evolution, with glamour gradually developing into concept over a decade. It didn’t happen that way. Homecoming was about the clothes. Far From Home gave us the first hint. Then No Way Home committed to the idea with one unforgettable Valentino spiderweb gown, three years before Roach publicly gave the approach a name.

By Brand New Day, they weren’t testing the idea anymore. They were playing with how many different ways they could tell the same story.

Ten years. Four films. One collaboration that began when some of fashion’s biggest houses wouldn’t dress his client – and ended with Zendaya and Law Roach making the Spider-Man press tour a fashion story in its own right.
