The British singer took to the stage wearing a Prada shearling coat, which I’m sure you all remember from the Fall 2011 collection. It carried a slightly naïve “Mod girl” energy filtered through Prada’s intellectual lens, which makes me wonder if her new haircut influenced this choice, as the two feel aligned. The cropped, softly waved style nods to a Mod aesthetic, picking up on the collection’s references and helping to anchor the coat in its original context.

However, I can’t say I love the coat on Rita, as the proportions are fighting her. On the runway, the coat was styled as a mini with bare legs, which kept the focus sharp and the silhouette clean. On Rita, it’s layered over a longer, fluid skirt. The coat is already textured and voluminous through the torso, and adding that extra length underneath extends the volume downward, disrupting the clean silhouette.

The mix of the heavy coat, delicate heels and a soft, romantic skirt pulls the outfit in opposing directions. The coat leans retro and slightly playful, while the rest feels more evening-leaning, so the look never quite comes together as a cohesive whole.

What do you think?
