Jennifer Lawrence Wore Phoebe Philo To The ‘Die My Love’ San Sebastián Film Festival Premiere

Following the San Sebastián Film Festival photocall earlier in the day for her new film Die My Love, I was expecting Jennifer Lawrence to revert to Dior for the premiere.

At first glance you might be thinking, “is this another Jonathan Anderson for Dior preview?” We had seen so many of those during Venice Film Festival, but no—Jennifer stepped out in Phoebe Philo, again.

Now, I know Phoebe Philo has a devoted cult following, but I would never label myself a devotee of her work under her own label, and unfortunately that feeling extends to this dress.

The idea is there: sharp architectural lines, an asymmetric cut-out, and cinched detailing. But the execution? That’s where it loses me. The fabric looks heavy, almost stiff, when it should feel fluid. The one long sleeve throws off the balance and reads more awkward than avant-garde. I was thinking that side would have worked better sleeveless, but I think I am just clutching at straws.

On a different frame—a gazelle-like Rosie Huntington-Whiteley or a statuesque Gwendoline Christie—the structure might have worked better. On Jennifer, though, it feels like the dress is wearing her. Instead of letting her natural ease and presence shine, it boxes her in and mutes her entirely.

Jennifer has an effortless charm on the red carpet, and I wanted this look to highlight that. Sadly, it misses the mark.

With two Phoebe Philo looks in one day, this leads me to wonder… is Jennifer still tied to Dior, or are the restrictions simply loosening under Jonathan Anderson? Only time will tell.
