Celebrity Fashion Icons We Don’t Talk About Enough
We spend a lot of time keeping tabs on celebrity fashion, and with good reason. Famous figures in Hollywood and elsewhere in the world of entertainment spend a great deal of time cultivating fabulous looks, and in doing so influence style and inspire fans around the world. As much attention as we pay to all of this though, there are inevitably some celebrity fashion icons we fail to mention as much as we should! So in this piece, we want to look past the Kardashians, Zendayas, and Beyoncés of the world and highlight some famous women who –– despite being extremely well known –– don’t get the style spotlight as often as they should.
Gemma Chan
An article on Insider referred to Gemma Chan as an “underrated style icon” last fall, and suffice it to say we couldn’t agree more. Not unlike her character Astrid from Crazy Rich Asians, Chan consistently wows with her attire, yet manages to pull off high-end fashion with natural grace. Not many women could pull up to the Met Gala looking like queens from fantasy novels, after all; Chan did just that, and it only left us wanting to see more of what she showcases in the years ahead.
Keira Knightley
Keira Knightley hasn’t done all that much prominent work in a few years now. Her last Pirates Of The Caribbean role was in 2017; The Imitation Game was in 2014; and believe it or not we’re nearing the 20-year anniversary of Love Actually. And yet, a recent poll at Small Cap News indicated that she’s still one of the most popular British film stars. This is of course mostly because she’s so talented, and so likeable in just about all of her roles. But her off-screen persona –– which includes an easy way with just about any kind of style one could dream up –– has appeal, too. Whether she’s dressing casually on her own time, posing for a magazine shoot, or glamming up the red carpet, Knightley defines the term “effortlessly chic.”
Kerry Washington
Kerry Washington may be the closest on our list to being a mainstream fashion icon. That is to say, she does get a fair amount of attention for her impeccable style sense. But frankly, we think she should get more! Washington always puts in the extra effort with everything from hairstyling and makeup, to inventive cuts on dresses, to popping colours and dazzling accessories. She’s a star who clearly enjoys fashion, and the fun she has with it goes a long way.
Sophie Turner
Like Keira Knightley, Sophie Turner has actually been out of the spotlight a little longer than it seems. Game Of Thrones has been off the air for two years now (and fizzled out before that), and it’s been longer than that since her time in the X-Men franchise. Also like Knightley however, she remains extremely popular, having come in with 11.4% of the vote in a survey on Gala Bingo on the “top female celebrity crushes” not long ago. This is due in no small part to her talent and beauty, but her sense of style certainly factors in as well. Few celebrities these days consistently look as unique or striking as Turner; whether she’s sharing a photo from home, doing an ad for a product, or hanging out on the red carpet, the actress always looks immaculate –– and elevates whatever she may be wearing accordingly.
Elizabeth Olsen
Elizabeth Olsen’s sisters –– the famous Mary Kate and Ashley –– get a ton of attention for their fashion choices to this day. Often overlooked however, Elizabeth tends to be every bit as fashionable (if not more so, depending on your personal opinions!). Elizabeth Olsen tends to be a little more unassuming in her choices, but knows exactly how to flatter her looks. Plus –– and we know it was just a character –– but her looks from decades past in the bizarre Marvel series WandaVision were extraordinarily fun.
Maggie Gyllenhaal
Maggie Gyllenhaal’s fashion is a lot like her career: You don’t always think of her first, but when you see her, everything is flawless. That’s by no means meant as a slight; she appears to simply be an actress who maintains a private life. Because of this though, it’s almost easy to forget she’s out there as one of our most talented actresses, until she pops up and plays a role beautifully. Just the same, she’s not a fashion icon who comes to mind, but when she appears in public –– as she did throughout the recent awards season –– she always looks as stylish as any star we could think of.
