Zhang Ziyi In Stéphane Rolland Couture – ‘Grace of Monaco’ Cannes Film Festival Premiere & Opening Ceremony

Opening Ceremony and "Grace Of Monaco" Premiere - The 67th Annual Cannes Film Festival

Zhang Ziyi took to the red carpet for the 67th Annual Cannes Film Festival opening ceremony and the ‘Grace of Monaco’ premiere this evening (May 14).

If you were expecting a princess gown, prepare to be disappointed because the Asian beauty hit a fashion home run in this Stéphane Rolland Spring 2014 Couture futuristic design.

I suppose it won’t be to everyone’s taste, but I love the juxtaposition of the edgy detailed bodice and the white skirt with the gently cascading ruffle.

Black Brian Atwood pumps, a black and white Bochic ‘Alicia’ clutch and Chopard jewels completed her look.

I think this is a very unique design and it looks amazing on her, she wears it very well. My only nitpick is the clutch, I don’t think that it works with the edgy bodice. Other than that, I love this.

Stunning dress. I had earmarked this for Nieves Alvarez.

  3. Alina May 14, 2014 at 18:28 #

I love this too! She’s been having fun with fashion lately and I’m really enjoying it.

  4. pinksugar May 14, 2014 at 18:28 #

I think is a very cool dress just not sure it is Cannes appropriate from the waist up. Nevertheless I do like and appreciate it.

I am not entirely sold on the contrast between bodice and skirt. I do think it works although I wonder if the bodice could have been paired with something even more fitting. But anyway, great look!

  6. Carrie May 14, 2014 at 18:33 #

    The contrast is so interesting!

    great dress!! <3

  10. dee May 14, 2014 at 18:56 #

I think she is making this work. So glad she is wearing something interesting and unique.

  11. Kim May 14, 2014 at 18:58 #

Might have worked if it was in all one colour or tones of, or if the ruffle was more of a pleated ruffle to complement the angular lines in the bodice, but as it is I find the dress really weird

  12. liz May 14, 2014 at 19:00 #

YES! my favourite look from the collection, and for once seeing it on the red carpet was even better than the runway!

  13. SunSkat May 14, 2014 at 19:03 #

No risk, no fun… Beautiful on her, bravo!

  14. justme May 14, 2014 at 19:09 #

It is unique but I only like the bottom half of the dress tbh.

  15. M May 14, 2014 at 19:09 #

She looks tacky and trying way too hard… Z zhang is overrated in my opinion…

  16. Pedro May 14, 2014 at 19:12 #

    Fantastic dress!

It will look better on someone taller

  17. Leti May 14, 2014 at 19:13 #

This would have been perfection without the ruffle. As is, it’s just over worked.

    • Camille May 14, 2014 at 19:35 #

I’m with you on the ruffle. I think this would look even better without it. Overall, I think she looks fab. I’d nitpick to say white shoes would have been a better choice than black ones, and a geometric type clutch would have been more in keeping. Glad to see someone take a risk and can’t wait to see more!

  18. Rebecca Z May 14, 2014 at 19:24 #

This is a very brave choice–quite a difficult dress to pull off. For me, she is doing it, though I think it is also very tough to photograph. Frankly, I might like it better without the sleeves. The contrast between this very edgy dress and her classic beauty is striking. I think it would look better without the earrings.

Opening-worthy drama, fashion-forwardness and flawless presentation – I’m sold as well.

      Agreed!

  20. Joy May 14, 2014 at 19:43 #

Yeah I’m in the NO camp. There’s way too much going on with the top of the dress, the billowy bottom of the dress, the huge ruffle in the back, the large dangly earrings and the loud clutch. It’s all just too much for her small frame. I always feel like she wears theses really difficult looks, but for me she just doesn’t pull it off. Generally speaking that is.

  21. Christine May 14, 2014 at 20:19 #

    Interesting dress for sure

  22. Lizet May 14, 2014 at 20:31 #

    I love it BDOTY
Lo amo, siempre he adorado los diseños de Stéphane Rolland, me encanta el drama que tienes, uno de los mejores vestidos que he visto hasta ahora

  23. H May 14, 2014 at 20:33 #

She is breaking the Cannes boundaries and I love it, she looks great and she is not overrated at all! She looks wonderful and bold and epic!

  24. amy May 14, 2014 at 21:08 #

nope. the ruffles are ruining this for me. get rid of them and it’s a winner

  25. Lee Ann May 14, 2014 at 21:09 #

i wouldn>t wear it but i admire her for doing so. She looks great

  26. EmmaWoodhouse May 15, 2014 at 00:08 #

I don’t love it but it’s certainly interesting and it’s a big dress, which makes me happy. It’s just not for me.

  27. Rye May 15, 2014 at 01:37 #

I don’t think she pulled it of at all. She certainly has the body but it doesn’t suit her attitude or personality. It would more interesting if someone like Rooney Mara wears it.

  28. CreoleLady May 15, 2014 at 02:27 #

I want to love this. Her beauty look is gorgeous, love from the neck up and that bag. But I want to see the gown on someone taller; platform shoes are no substitute. Prefer on the model.

  29. Alex May 15, 2014 at 02:44 #

Warrior top and princess bottom. Bold and stunning

  30. Jones19 May 16, 2014 at 10:18 #

I like it but I can’t say I love it. She’s just not the right type to pull off this type of gown. I’m imagining Lucy Liu in it and already it’s ten times better.

  31. Sunisa May 22, 2014 at 09:46 #

    my most favorite dress ever!
